History and Facts on Women’s Clothing
The average size of women’s clothing in the United States today is 14, plus. In the past it has been society that put expectations on the female. If they did not have a naturally small waist, she molded it to fit society’s view of what women should look like. She would strap on a corset, to shape her waist and lift her breast. No matter that this was very uncomfortable. The corset came to an end in 1913 when Mary Phelps fashioned the first bra from two silk handkerchiefs. This idea progressed to the bras of today, complete with cup sizes and bras to meet everybody's needs.
In the 1920s the flapper look came in where small breasts, small waists and narrow hips were emphasized. Beauty by fad became popular and soon diets ushered in. The idea was with the proper diet, self control and exercise one could shape the body. It was as though the plus size community never existed.
Industrialization started mass producing “standardized” clothing, forcing the woman to shape their body to fit into them. Later manufacturers started to produce clothes aimed at the plus size women who did not fit the system. Finally women's plus size clothing arrived. Close attention was given to “real” bodies, hips, necklines, rises, waists and length of the sleeves. Fashionable is the theme.
Over a quarter of all women's clothing sales this year, will be in the plus size category.
