(buoy no. 2) 2000 hardwoods, steel, pigmented glue, varnish 252 x 164.5 x 88 cm (buoy no. 2) 2000 quicktime movie
"buoy no. 1" and "buoy no. 2" evolved together in a series of works which are an examination of nautical formalism. Material specificity and boatbuilding conventions allude to forms which experience a dynamic and are subject to tangential forces. Similarly, the buoy series of forms are contrite in their making. They take on modes of working with wood in boatbuilding, admit a Broodthaers attention to past production and acquiring, and validate/deny appropriate use of materials. The torsional aspects of their making acknowledge both the hidden stresses and process present in their materials and the age of their method. |
