2009
(diaspora) (detail)
2009 There are patterned life cycles made up in blossoms on the wind, and these are fragile emissions offered for brief moments only. The forest canopy releases its fruit and fills the lacunae with its benevolence, that all will return, once again, to balance. The dispersed seeds, the twirls of maple, the fecund pods explode, add provenance to the soil below. In mimesis to the fertile wind, diaspora enables the timed dispensing of free-falling seeds/motes, that briefly suspire and trace this path — the return to earth. These seeds/motes are carried to potential sites for growth, where they announce their essence through fading points of light, for their brief lifetimes. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, opened February 26, 2008, has informed the context of this project as it relates to synthetic systems controlling seed disbursement. The non-proliferating and diversity-limiting practices of Monsanto operate to further force synthetic and exclusionary models of crop seeding.
