Fish Species Taken In Our Area
Salmon - coho, chum, pink, sockeye and chinook
Halibut
Rockfish - yellow eye
Lingcod
Cutthroat Trout and Steelhead
Fishing for Halibut and Lingcod usually starts in April depending on the
weather and water conditions. Swiftsure bank is the favorite spot for
halibut and is about 20 miles from Port Renfrew, although halibut, lingcod
and rockfish are taken along the coastline as well. By June the sea
conditions improve and that's when chinook salmon start showing up.
Chinook fishing improves through summer months and starts tapering off in
late September. July, August and September are the best months for coho,
pink and sockeye. The chum fishery will start in late August and go into
October along with our coho that are returning to the
San Juan
and Gordon rivers. Dungeness
crab are plentiful in the bay with the most productive months being May,
June and July. Smelting on the 1-½ mile beach is best in the summer months.
For fresh water fishing cutthroat trout and steelhead are in the San Juan
River, Gordon River and
Harris
Creek
all year round. Lizard Lake and
Ferry
Lake
produce cut throat trout as well. All of these fishing spots are accessible
by gravel road.
