This is the second edition of a lengthy workbook on the “how’s” and tools for creating Boards that matter. It grew out of a course developed for Simon Fraser University’s Non Profit Management Certificate Program. Each chapter stands alone. The table of contents and list of appendices clearly indicate where to look for practical information and help.

Within the workbook, there are two simpler tests for Boards that want to evaluate themselves. This is a longer test that has been used by several clients on a regular basis, in preparation for their annual Board retreats.

Written in Mexico, this is the first of a series of reflective essays on the changing nature and roles of Boards that make a real difference to their organizations. The emphasis is on Boards as citizens in action, providing leadership to their organizational and broader communities.

This is the second of the series of reflective essays, focusing on the challenges faced by Boards of non profit organizations that are heavily influenced and shaped by contracting with government and public institutions. The essay emerged out of a conversation with a colleague, John Talbot, about how we could, as consultants, better assist Boards in making a real difference.
