SUBJECT: Your Progress and Future
My dear Dogwood,
I note with some interest that you saw fit to take my previous advice and
encouraged your patient to pursue a path of denial. We would have been much
better off if you had done so to a more vigorous degree earlier, rather than
simply using this weapon in a low key, supporting role. But, better late that
ever.
Your patient, I see, has truly gone whole hog if this direction. Not only is he
behaving as if the denial had a rational basis, he is taking some truly superb
steps toward making the denial appear utterly plausible. All the suppression of
dissent, ignoring of objections, and one-sided intellectual and legalistic
rationalism is, as I tried to convince you in the past, wonderfully effective
in ensuring that true faith in the Enemy will not intervene with your patient
to undo the harm we have had him do. And, as a bonus, it discourages those in
his sphere of influence, who hold and nurture such a faith, to the point that
an efficacious breakthrough of it from their quarter is an ever-decreasing
probability. You might have known that advice I give you is based on proven and
tested principles. I can only hope that in the future, you adopt it more
quickly.
My main concern at the moment is that you will fail to take advantage of the
situation that has developed. We know, for instance, that certain busy bodies
in his sphere of influence have set about doing something that smacks of
bearing witness to what the Enemy has revealed to His followers. What I don't
see is a plan from you to take steps to insure that your patient continues to
take no step whatsoever in the direction of true dialogue with those who
disagree with him. We cannot rely on inertia alone to insure that he and his
followers continue to mistake the ersatz dialogue they have promoted for the
real thing. Your laziness and overconfidence could very well result in us
losing everything, even with the goal of than overt act of apostasy so near. So
please busy yourself and get your plan to me without delay. If you blow it now,
you know the consequences.
The outcome of the coming gathering is going to test your mettle no matter which way it goes. I think we can rule out an utter loss, the way your patient has arranged things, but besides complete victory, we must also anticipate delayed victory. Here, in either case, inertia is our ally - not yours, theirs. If our victory is complete, inertia will help us convince people in places not directly influenced that they can ignore the matter, and carry on as if nothing happened. If our victory is delayed, and the time for implementation is not right away, inertia must be used to keep people talking, rather than actually doing anything harmful, like standing faithful witness.
Remember, the facade we have created, that what is proposed is sanctified by love, is a brittle one. Keeping people talking nicely about love will stop them from realizing that love can't sanctify anything, and only the Enemy can do that. But we have to continue to delude them into thinking they can do it by themselves, their way, and even better than the Enemy could.
I close by warning you that
my predecessor as undersecretary, His Disgrace the Secretary himself, has taken
a personal interest in this case. He, like I, once had a young nephew in the
field when he held this office. Let that young tempter's fate when he failed
spur you to unceasing, ever increasing efforts in this final month of our
campaign. We all await your report of success, and you know what will happen
if, after all of our efforts, one is not forthcoming.
Your loving uncle,
Tapeworm
