2Death Notice/Obituary, 1897.
"TIVERTON GAZETTE.
CADELEIGH. The Late Mr H B Roberts. --- With much regret we record the death of Mr Hugh Badcock Roberts, for many years one of the most highly respected agriculturists in this neighbourhood, who passed away on Wednesday last at the age of 77. Mr Roberts, in the course of his long and useful life, filled various public offices, for several years being a member of the Tiverton Town Council. He was a Nonconformist of the old school, and in politics a Conservative. One of his sons, formerly in business in Tiverton, is now a clergyman, having been ordained by the Bishop of Exeter in 1886. The mortal remains of the deceased were laid to rest on Saturday, in the family vault in the burial ground of the Congregational chapel at Little Silver. The mourners were Mr Hugh Roberts, and the Rev. Frank Roberts (sons), Mrs. Hitt and Miss Roberts (daughters), Mr P Were (nephew). A large number of farmers and others assembled around the graveside. The coffin, which was of polished oak with brass mountings, bore the inscription "Hugh Badcock Roberts, born March 8th, 1820, died August 18th, 1897." Messrs. F Beedell, J Counter, R Kelland, J Knight, J Thorne (Huntland), and Veysey, farmers of the district, acted as bearers. Many wreaths were sent by relatives and friends. The arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Thorne Bros."
