2Death Notice/Obituary, 1899.
"CHELTENHAM EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 2, 1899.
The Late Mr. John Lea.
A LARGELY ATTENDED FUNERAL.
The funeral of the late Mr. John Lea, President of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society, took place on Wednesday last, the remains being interred at the New Cemetery. The burial rites were preceded by a service at Wesley Chapel, at which a large number of friends assembled to pay a last mark of respect to the memory of the deceased. The cortége left No. 2, Cambridge-villas, about half-past ten, and arrived at the chapel shortly before eleven o’clock. The coffin, which was of polished oak, with brass furniture, was borne in an open car; on it were inscribed the simple words-"John Lea, died 22nd July, 1899, in his 83rd year." The only wreath placed on the coffin was that from his niece, Miss Jenkins; other floral tributes were sent "In affectionate remembrance from Louise and Cecil," by "James B. Winterbotham, in affectionate remembrance of an hereditary friendship." By Mr. Edwin Lea, Miss Lea, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. White, Miss Bodill, Miss Perkins, and "a token of esteem from Pierreville." The chief mourners were--First carriage, Miss Jenkins, Mrs. Humphreys, Mr. C. Humphreys, and Mrs. Rogers; second, Mr. E. Lea, Mr. Rogers, Ald. J. B. Winterbotham, and Councillor Gurney; third, Mrs. Bodill, Mrs. McCrocker, Mr. Hendrey, and Mrs. Archer; fourth, the Mayor (Ald. Norman), Mr. R. Ticehurst (chairman of the Gas Company, of which company deceased was the senior director), Mr. R. Oakey, and Mr. E. Oakey; fifth, Rev. S. Dalzell, Rev. R. G. Fairbairn, Rev. W. Watson, and Mr. Moody Bell; sixth, Mr. R. O. Paterson (manager of the Gas Co.), Mr. C. Price (cashier), Mr. J. O. Smith, and Mr. T. Whittard; seventh, Councillor Bence, Mr. J. Sawyer, C.C., Mr. E. Parker, and Mr. J. Playle; eighth, Mr. J. Darter, Mr. G. Caudle, and Mr. Bennett; ninth, Councillor Hayward, Mr. W. Mack, Mr. A. Miles, and Mr. F. Drake; tenth, eleventh, and twelfth, directors of the Building Society, viz., Councillors Cooper and Steel, Messrs. T. Farber, E. Snowsell, B. W. Pearce, W. Witchell, J. Pilley, G. H. Bayley, C. H. Channon, G. C. Gobey, with Mr. D. Lewis, secretary. At the chapel the mourners were joined by Alderman Skillicorne, Councillors Baker and Brown, representing the Liberal Club; and among the general congregation were Messrs. J. W. T. Jackson, W. H. Pearce, W. Hayman, A. H. Hillen, J. James, Radburn, Jordan, A. R. Caudle, W. Milnes, Clee, Thomas, Vale, Gregory, Lusty, &c.

The opening sentences of the funeral service were recited by the Rev. S. Dalzell, as the body was carried to the bier awaiting it in front of the draped pulpit. The Rev. R. G. Fairbairn read the Epistle, and the Rev. S. Dalzell the Psalm. The hymn "There is a land of pure delight," was afterwards sung, and the Rev. S. Dalzell then gave a brief address. He remarked that they were met to convey to their last resting place the remains of their dear friend, one of the oldest connected with that church, and, in all probability, one of the oldest connected with the town. For more than sixty years he had gone in and out amongst them in connection with that house of prayer and its services. He believed that before that chapel was built their friend worshipped with others who gathered together in the old chapel, and that he was amongst the very few who still remained who came from that old building when the present house of prayer was opened for the service of God. He should leave to others who had known him longer and better than he had, to record what their brother had been able to do in connection with the education of that town, in connection with the thrift of its inhabitants, and in connection with various other schemes having for their object the uplifting of humanity and the leaving of the world better than he found it. In all probability those who had known him best and longest would be prepared to say that his had been a useful rather than an eventful life. As he had said, their friend’s association with that church had been a very lengthened one, and they recalled with gratitude to God, not only his interest in their services, but also his ready financial help in every time of need. He (Mr. Dalzell) had been pleased to note that his interest in the church had not declined with declining days and years. He had frequently had opportunities of talking with him on the subject of their work there-a work in which he had not been able of late years to join, but in which his interest had still been very keen and very sincere. When bodily health permitted, he came to their services. The last Sunday morning he (the speaker) had the privilege of occupying that pulpit their friend sat in his accustomed place. On that occasion he spoke on the loneliness of Christ, and referred to the loneliness in which many of His people passed their declining years, and tried to encourage such by the thought that in the coming years all loneliness would be over, that in the dark valley of the shadow of death they would not be left alone, for Christ would be there to enlighten it by His presence and to cheer His people with His comfort-that loneliness on the other side would be unknown, because they would be forever with the Lord. Little did he anticipate that he was speaking that morning to one who was so soon to join the company of the Firstborn in heaven. It was given to their brother to have a long, quiet eventide. The sun of his life set very gradually, and at last it dipped suddenly into the golden sea. Before he (the speaker) left that town, ten or twelve days ago, for the Conference, he made it his business to pay one of his last visits to their dear departed friend. They had a long conversation together, and prayer afterwards; and he was very much struck with his firm confidence in Christ. He expressed himself as resting upon the atonement of his Lord and Saviour, and when they knelt together, a little company in his room, at the throne of grace, he very audibly and very earnestly responded to the words of prayer offered. He was stricken down somewhat suddenly at the last, and consciousness passed away from what had always been an active brain; but they needed no dying testimony. Within a fortnight he had expressed his firm trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as a personal Saviour, and they had no doubt whatever that he had gone to be for ever with the Lord. They could not refrain that day from dropping a tear on the grave of one whom they had known so long and whom they had loved so well. But they sorrowed not as those who had no hope: mingled with their sorrow there were elements of relief and gratitude, for which they praised God. They felt very thankful for all the comforts that surrounded their brother in his declining years and in the time of sickness. They thanked God that He had satisfied him with more than life. They did not mourn that day for one who had been cut down in early life or in immature manhood. It was given to their brother to live longer than the allotted space of man, and, like a ripe shock of corn, he was now gathered into the eternal garner. He had outlived most of his early friends. Over the grave of some the tears of wife and children were shed; in this case the company of his friends had for the most part gone before, and few remained behind. He was sure their tenderest sympathies were with one who during many years of suffering had watched tenderly at his side and had comforted his declining days. God was merciful to their brother. He did not permit him to see death; and as they went forward to bury him out of their sight they felt they were parting with a consistent Christian, with a respected citizen, and they prayed that God might raise up others who should be baptised from the dead and who would take the same interest that he had taken in the welfare of the people, in the interest of the scholars, and in the well-being of the Church.

After another hymn--"Give me the wings of faith"-the Rev. R. G. Fairbairn offered prayer, and the funeral procession was then re-formed and moved out of the chapel, the organist (Mr. F. C. Bell) meanwhile playing the "Dead March" in Saul. The Burial Service was concluded at the graveside by the Rev. S. Dalzell and the Rev. W. Watson.

The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Shirer and Haddon."
