3Death Notice/Obituary, 1923.
"WESTERN OBSERVER, November 22, 1923 (p4c5)

IN MEMORIAM
MRS. PETER WERE.

The many friends of Mrs. Margaretta Were, of Bradford Farm, Tiverton, heard with sincere regret of her death, which took place on Wednesday at the age of 66. Mrs. Were was a representative of one of the oldest yeoman families in the district, and her husband, who predeceased her in January, 1909, was one of the best known and most successful farmers in the district. He will be remembered as a keen supporter of the late Sir John Amory’s Harriers: hospitality at Bradford Farm, where the family have been for over 40 years, was proverbial.

The funeral at Halberton Church on Saturday afternoon was largely attended, Mrs. Were being buried in a grave next to that of her husband in the north-east portion of the churchyard. The service was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. D. S. Evans, and the family mourners were Mr. P. Were (son), Miss Hilda Were (daughter), Mr. C. Were (Greenlynch), Mr. R. Were (Churchwalls), Mrs. Salter, Mrs. Veysey, Mrs. C. Deeks, Miss K. Were, Mr. Walter Wotton, Mrs. R. Were, Mrs. W. J. Thorne, Mr. J. Chave, and Mr. E. J. Baker.

The bearers were the following employees:- Messrs. F. Perham, A. Bishop, T. Tottle, Geo. Collins, J. Hutchinson, and W. Norman. The following attended from Bradford Cottages: Mrs. Perham, Mrs. J. Hutchinson, Mrs. Bishop and Mrs. Collins. The coffin was of polished oak with brass mountings, and bore the inscription: “Margaretta Were, died Nov. 14th, 1923, aged 66.”

Among those at the graveside were Mr. R. Cook, Crazelowman; Mr. S. W. Lock, Rollifants; Mr. T. Hayward, Crazelowman; Mr. C. Rabjohns, Uplowman Court; Mr. R. Frankpitt, Tiverton; Mr. S. Pearce, Halberton; Mr. J. Gollop, Doctors; Mrs. Coram, Bycott; Mr. R. Coram; Mr. R. C. Burston, Mr. F. J. Brown, Mr. J. Goodland, Mr. F. Goodland, Mr. Wooldridge Lister, Tiverton; Mr. T. A. Chave, Mr. W. Bowden, Coombe; Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Bucknell, Uplowman; Mr. L. Stagg, Tiverton; Mr. Wood, Mr. Warner, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hutchinson, Sampford Peverell; Mrs. Norman, Sellake; Mrs. Cross, Mr. Batten, Widhayes, etc.

Wreaths were sent by the following:- “In ever loving memory of our dear mother, from Peter and Hilda,” “In loving memory from Mimy, Cliff, Reg., Mary, Dollie, Flossie and Kathleen,” “With deepest sympathy,” from the employees at Bradford; “In kind remembrance,” from Mrs. W. Goodland, Jim and Fred; “With deepest sympathy,” from all at Hartnolls and Bycott; “With deepest sympathy, from Mrs. Tottle and Mrs. Clay, Tiverton; “With deepest sympathy from all at Sellake”; “With deepest sympathy,” from Mr. and Mrs. Warner."
