Esther Wenzel OLIVET - Esther Mildred Wenzel, 88, of Olivet, SD died peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Tri County Health Center, Hatton, ND. She was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2006. Esther (Tohms) Wenzel was born March 24, 1919, in Milbank, SD, the daughter of Adolph and Rose Marie (Knaus) Tohms. Upon graduating from Milbank High School, she worked near Chicago for a year before going to North Central College where she met Sterling Wenzel. They were married May 10, 1942. Together they ministered to what are now United Methodist churches across the Dakotas, as well as other interim ministries. In North Dakota they lived and served at Walcott, Great Bend, Holmes, Linton and Kindred. In South Dakota they lived and served at Olivet, Sioux Falls and Canton. They retired to Olivet, SD. Her husband Sterling died in l991. Until her illness Esther spent winters living next door to her sister, Wilhelmine in Pinnellas Park, FL. Esther was preceded in death by daughters: Margaret who died in 1948, age 9 months, and Mary Baltzer, who died in 2001, age 50. Grandchildren, Tara Baltzer and Scott Wenzel also preceded her in death, as did her older sisters Emma Liebrenz, Wilhelmine Greene and Annabelle Everett. She is survived by three children: Lee (Janet) Wenzel, Eden Prairie, MN, Shirley (Dale) Beine, Reynolds, ND, and Mark (Martha) Wenzel, Phoenix, AZ, as well as 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Roy (Goldie) Tohms, Indiana, PA. Esther will also be missed by dear friends and neighbors in the Olivet community and in the many communities where she lived and was appreciated. She loved working with children in Sunday School and through the education programs of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She was a strong advocate for the WCTU and was the current state president. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the Olivet United United Methodist Church. Interment of cremains will be at Zion Cemetery, Langdon, ND."

Emma Liebrenz, 97, Mound
Emma Liebrenz, 97, of Mound, Minn., died on Tuesday, May 23. A celebration of her life will be held later this summer. She was born in Harvey, N.D., on Oct. 7, 1908, and grew up in Milbank, S.D. She attended North Central College in Naperville, Ill., and received her first bachelor's degree in 1934 from Ohio University, her second bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Minnesota, and even had taken courses toward her doctoral degree when she retired. She taught many subjects and grades, concluding her teaching career at the Hopkins School District, where she taught reading classes for almost 20 years. She married Allan Liebrenz, originally from Paynesville, on May 7, 1939. She was a dedicated member of the Mound Evangelical Free Church and was active in church activities her entire life. She was a church pianist for many years. She loved traveling with her husband and gardening. In recent years, she was thrilled to personally meet and get to know scholarship recipients at Crown College and continued her friendship with them long after their graduation. She is survived by her children, Allan (Janet) Liebrenz and Marilyn (James) Liebrenz Himes; sisters, Wilhelmine Higley Greene and Esther Wenzel; brother, Roy (Goldie) Tohms; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many other relatives. She is preceded in death by her husband, Allan F. Liebrenz; her sister, Annabelle Tohms Everett; and her parents, Adolph and Rose Tohms."
