----------------------------------------------------------
Bernard GIBSON came to Canada from Birmingham, England in April 1899, joining his older brother William Frederick (Will) GIBSON and his wife Mary Emma (May) WAKELAM [S.S. Dominion departing Liverpool for Montreal on April 13th, 1899 -gg].. Will & May had emigrated to Canada in 1897 homesteading in the Blackwood district, Assiniboia NWT [85km ENE of Regina, Saskatchewan].

The difficult pioneering farming life adopted by Will and Bernard was remarkable considering the brothers came from an urban lifestyle in & around the 'Jewellery Quarter' (Hockley & Ladywood districts) of Birmingham.

Bernard met and married Ellen CARPENTER in Kenlis on Apr 14, 1904. There, Ellen, together with her father William Baker CARPENTER and sister Sallie had (for a time) operated a halfway house for pioneers. Sallie (Sarah Were CARPENTER) was a witness at the marriage of Ellen & Bernard, signing "S.W. Carpenter" on the marriage certificate. Bernard & Ellen resided on NE08-19-10 W2 where they farmed and raised a family of three sons. By 1930 the family owned or leased 5 quarter-sections (800 acres) of land: NE08-19-10, NW09-19-10, SE17-19-10, SE05-19-10, and SW08-19A-10.

In the early 1940's Bernard & Ellen retired from farming and moved year-round to "Littlewhiles", their cottage and Bernard's studio at nearby Lake Katepwa in the Qu'Appelle Valley. It should be noted that both Bernard and Will were talented artists (as was their father). Our Gibson family has a number of watercolor paintings, paintings on porcelain, and pencil sketches, done in Canada and England.

After Ellen died in 1945 Bernard began staying in the winter months at the YMCA in Regina, returning to Lake Katepwa in the summer. In Jan 1966 he suffered a stroke in Regina and was hospitalized for several months. After being in several rest homes, he arrived back at Echo Lodge, the new rest home in Fort Qu'Appelle, when it opened. He died in December 1972, and is buried beside his wife in All St's Anglican Church cemetery, not far from "Littlewhiles".

----------------------------------------------------------
In an interview with Bernard GIBSON by Gillian Hanley conducted at Echo Lodge, Fort Qu'Appelle on Jul 30, 1971 [Ref: Oral History Tape R-6118/R-6119 60:53 min., Saskatchewan Archives, 3303 Hillsdale St., Regina, Sask.] Bernard states he was born on Oct. 07, 1880 in Birmingham, England, birth registered at the Ladywood Registration Office, christened at The Church of the Saviour, emigrated to Canada in April 1899. Note: The Church of the Saviour was a Baptist (later Methodist) Church located at Edward Street, corner of Helena Street, Ladywood. Built in 1846/47 on a design by Bateman & Drury, it was demolished sometime after it closed in 1965. Baptismal records (for the period 1896-1909 only) are deposited in the Birmingham City Archives, Ref: MC 95/1 -gg.

Ellen CARPENTER [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 1, 2 on 25 Sep 1873 in Middle Bradley, Tiverton, Devon, England. She died on 01 Jun 1945 in Katepwa, Saskatchewan, Canada. William Baker Carpenter sold Gt. Bradley farm and left Devon with most of his family toward the end of 1888, relocating to a rented farm, Hill Farm Dymock, Gloucestershire, where the family stayed for a few years before moving to live over the butcher's shop, next to the Post Office, in the Square, in Ludlow, Shropshire. At this time, Mary and Minnie Carpenter remained in Devon, where in 1891 they were domiciled with relatives.

In 1891 James Carpenter was serving his apprenticeship as a butcher, living with his mother's cousin James GALE & family in Portsea, Hampshire. He returned to set up a butchers business with his father in Ludlow in the early 1890's but would return to Hampshire by 1895 [see notes for JC, Eng > Australia c1912]. In 1894 Alfred Carpenter also moved to Hampshire to serve an apprenticeship [see notes for AMC, Eng > New Zealand 1909].

William H. Carpenter joined the army, circa 1895.

In 1896 at the age of 27 Mary B. Carpenter, eldest child of William & Maria, became the first in her large family to leave England, travelling to Toronto, Canada, where she worked as a nurse at Toronto General Hospital [S.S. Parisian departing Liverpool for Quebec & Montreal on Aug 20th, 1896].

In 1898 William B. Carpenter followed his daughter to Canada, travelling west with the intention of taking up land & preparing a home for his wife & younger members of his family [S.S. Carthaginian departing Liverpool for Quebec & Montreal on June 9th, 1898]. About then, Maria with children Frank, Sarah, John & Gweneth rejoined with James and Alfred in Hampshire, while Robert & Ellen remained in Ludlow.

By 1902 Maria with her 3 youngest children moved back to Tiverton, Devon. She was joined there later by Alfred.

In 1902 Frank emigrated to Canada via New York. Travelling with him was Mary who must have returned temporarily to England [S.S. Philadelphia departing Southampton for New York on Feb 22nd, 1902]. Frank found work with Eaton's Department Store in Toronto and began his long and successful career with that company. Soon after in 1902 Ellen and Sarah embarked for Canada [S.S. Tunisian departing Liverpool for Quebec & Montreal on Apr 24th, 1902]. The sisters travelled west and rejoined their father. For a time, father & daughters operated a halfway house for pioneers at Kenlis, Assiniboia, NWT (later Saskatchewan). Ellen married Bernard GIBSON in Kenlis in 1904. Sadly, WBC died nearby in Regina on Sep 04, 1905. In the spring of 1906 Sarah was living with Bernard & Ellen on the farm.

In 1906 Maria S. Carpenter and her youngest child Gweneth emigrated to Canada and took up residence with Frank in Toronto [S.S. Victorian departing Liverpool for Halifax & St. John on Apr 4th, 1906] and Sarah returned east to make her home with them there. Note: John S. Carpenter also arrived in Toronto about 1905 or 06, ship and exact date unknown. By then Mary (wed in Toronto in 1905) was living with her husband John HARDY, his 2 daughters from a previous marriage, and their son Ivan on the Hardy family farm at Oakville near Toronto.

In 1910 the main CARPENTER family group in Toronto swelled with the arrival of Minnie and her husband George CHILCOTT (married in Devon in 1904) and William H. Carpenter, his wife Frances HUSSEY (married in Sussex in 1905) and their daughter Bessie [S.S. Lake Champlain departing Liverpool for St. John on Mar 16th, 1910].

Frank married Edith DAVIE in Toronto in 1912. They subsequently moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Maria S. Carpenter passed away in Toronto on Dec 29, 1916.

Maria Symons WERE [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 1, 2 on 15 Oct 1844 in Bolham, Tiverton, Devon, England. She died 3, 4 on 29 Dec 1916 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She was buried 5 in St. James Cemetery, Toronto. She married 6, 7 William Baker CARPENTER on 03 Mar 1868 in Hennock, Devon, England.
