Other marriages:WERE, Mary
Notes from Beth (Shepherd) Slater:
Francis left home in 1908 to do farm work around Sidmouth/Halberton/Tiverton area. It was sometime in the next couple of years that he was employed in the gardens by the Were Family at Curham Farm, Halberton. It was here that he met Mary Were, daughter of owner George Were. Mary was 6 years his senior but that did not matter to them. Mary's family did not approve of this relationship so Francis & Mary had to "sneak around". Mary was also a religious teacher and quite prominent in the area. Mary became pregnant, much to the disgust of her family and Francis & Mary were married on Jan 1, 1912.
They left Liverpool for U.S.A. on February 3, 1912, landing in New York, but settled in Pennsylvania on a farm. It was here that Mary gave birth to their first child but unfortunately he did not survive and in the fall of 1912, they moved to Toronto, Canada. Here Francis worked for the Riverdale Lumber Co. - a teamster. He drew the first load of lumber for the Toronto Union Railway Station. It was a load of fencing to surround the site and the offices of the excavating company. They struggled through the next four years and Mary gave birth to two more children - Frances Mary in 1913 and another son in 1915 who did not survive.
In 1916, Francis, Mary & little Frances packed up and moved on to Dafoe, Saskatchewan where Francis' two older brothers George & Tom and their families had already settled. Between the 3 brothers they bought land beside each other and began the long road to a secure future.
It was unfortunate that in the late spring of 1919, Mary fell victim to the "swine flu" that swept the prairies. Frances was now without her mother and it would be 2 years later that her father would remarry - Sarah J. Cochrane. Francis & Sarah had three children - Jean, Edith, and Donald.
The "Bolt boys" as they were known were well liked, served on many municipal & district councils, and served their communities well.
They had the following children:
F i Jean BOLT was born in 1922. She died in 1991. She was employed as Bell Telephone. F ii Living M iii Living

Excerpts from the book "The House that WERE Built" by Eric Were, Adelaide, Australia:Devon can be aptly named the cradle of the Were family. In old church records the name Were is more prolific in Devon than in other western counties of England. From this ancient Were breeding ground there emerges one, George Were of Halberton, who became the progenitor of the Were family branches now resident in New Zealand.
George Were was born at Halberton on the 27th April 1817, the son of yeoman John Were (b. 1776) and his wife Mary. Although it is difficult to trace families back into the 18th Century, this family's generations can be reasonably followed back to a William Were (c.1700).
Like his father, George Were was a yeoman farmer (i.e. a man farming his own land). On 17th May 1849, when George was 32 yrs. old he married 23 year old Mary Ann Webb. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Land Webb and his wife Ann, and was born at Halberton on 20th July 1825. She is reported to have been a very beautiful woman.
Records show that George Were took his bride to live in London where he carried on the trade of Cheese-monger, possibly handling the fine cheeses of his home county. (It is said that at one time there were as many as 28 varieties of Devon cheese available.) The family address was 9 Cambridge Street, in the sub-district of Golden Square, Middlesex. George's brother-in-law, Robert Chatty Webb, was assisting in the London business at this time.
The George Were family lived in London until early 1858 and during this period six children were born: George (20-5-1850) died at 9 weeks; John (27-7-1851); George (25-1-1853); James (11-6-1854); Robert (19-6-1855); and Thomas (13-11-1856).
In 1858 the Were family returned to Devon and followed farming pursuits, while Robert Webb remained in London - presumably carrying on with the cheese trade. George Were's estate was Lower Curham, near Halberton, in a district where the Were's had farmed for generations. (One of the places inhabited by this family was ancient Moorstone.) After returning to Devon, George and Mary had the following children: William (23-6-1858) lived 7 months; Charles (31-20-1859); William Henry (1-12-1860); Mary Ann (27-1-1862); Charlotte (5-7-1863).
This large family circle was broken when George suffered the loss of his wife, Mary Ann, on 21st May 1864. She had born eleven children and was 38 years old at the time of her death. She was buried at Halberton. George employed a housekeeper, Mrs. Morrison, to care for his 9 living children who ranged in age from 10 months to 13 years. There were also two other servants working on the estate.
George remarried in 1869 to Maria Disney, and from that point the family began to break up - the older sons leaving home to fend for themselves as soon as they were of an age to do so. When Robert was 15 he went to London to join the household of his uncle, Robert Webb. The children born to George and Maria at Lower Curham were: Harriet (17-2-1870); Arthur George (12-5-1874); Peter (18-7-1876) lived 4 days; Peter Albert (11-3-1878).
Four years after the birth of his last son, the 64 year old George Were drew up his last will and testament and signed it on 19th January 1882. From this document it appears that George was well settled and held interest in such properties as Crowe Green Cottages and gardens, Ash Cross Parks, Pigsfoot, Cross Parks, Burlands and Willy's Close. George Were passed to rest on 28th January 1882, nine days after he had signed his will. Members of his family were already scattered, some as far as New Zealand, and while the Were line slowly decreased in the homeland, it steadily grew in far off places.
