Notes from Roger Tonkin, 2004:

"Charles SANDREY left Devon and went to London where he met and married my grandmother Agnes Wells. The Wells family were Fruiterers (but Agnes' father was a seaman, as was his father before him). Charles and Agnes had 2 children, my mother Lorna in 1902 and her sister Joan in 1905. Charles then decided to emigrate to Canada, where he intended to "make good" then send for the family to join him. I don't know when this was, but I think probably about 1908-1910. In Canada he vanished, and all efforts to find him failed - maybe intentionally! The last that was heard of him was that he got a job on a ranch, and was a member of a gang sent out in the winter to find another group who had gone out to repair a fence and failed to return. The story goes that they found the missing men frozen to death, but during the course of the mission Charles got frostbite in an arm, and one foot and was hospitalized. He had worked his way over on a boat as crew, and his letter said that the doctor's wanted to amputate, but he would have have none of it and was thinking of going back to sea to recover. He apparently didn't!

So if you or your researchers come across Charles, or his tomb, let me know. The trouble is that I don't know exactly when he left, the name of his ship, or its destination so it's a bit like the proverbial needle in the haystack. Winnipeg has been mentioned but then again it is all 100 year old rumor!"

Notes from Gordon Gibson, April 2004:

Following-up on Roger's intriguing story above led to a death record for one Charles SANDRY [note spelling change] who died in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada on Jan 10, 1927. This death record gives Charles' birthdate as Jun 15, 1878 in England [father Charles, mother unknown] - exactly the same month and day, but 6 six years too recent to match the birthdate for Charles SANDREY (b. Scorsham, Launcells, Cornwall, Jun 15, 1872). Note that only five Charles SANDREY/SANDRYs were born in all England & Wales during the period 1870-1880 (GRO Index) and none match the year & quarter for Jun 15, 1878:

1. 1870-2nd qtr SANDREY Charles Walter - Stratton vol 5c / page 4 <- died as infant - age <1 year
2. 1872-2nd qtr SANDREY Charles - Stratton vol 5c / page 4 <-b. 1872 Jun 15, Scorsham, Launcells
3. 1873-2nd qtr SANDRY John Charles - St Columb vol 5c / page 103
4. 1876-3rd qtr SANDRY Charles - St Columb vol 5c / page 91
5. 1880-1st qtr SANDRY Charles - St Columb vol 5c / page 93

Working from B/M/D records for the provinces of B.C. and Manitoba, obituaries in the Vancouver Sun and Province, MI's for Fraser Cemetery, New Westminster, B.C. and Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby, B.C. and a local history book for the Swan Hills/Bowsman district of northwestern Manitoba, the following partial sketch has emerged for Charles SANDRY's origins, travels and short life in Canada:

Charles SANDRY [or SANDREY?] emigrated from Cornwall, England to Canada c1907. In Winnipeg, Manitoba he married(!...) Florence Annie PETHERAM on Dec 26, 1907 and their only child William C. SANDRY was born in Manitoba on Mar 07, 1910. Florence is the daughter of Robert George PETHERAM and Clara Jane JONES. She is 2nd-born in a family of 12 who survived to adulthood: 3 boys and 9 girls. The PETHERAM family emigrated to Canada from Whitchurch, Somerset, England c1903, settling sometime after 1906 in the Bowsman area of northwestern MB. At least 4 of the PETHERAM daughters married in the district (to SMITH, BELL, MULLIN, SOURA) and have living descendents there today. One son served with the Canadian forces in WW1.

Charles, Florence & William SANDRY relocated to B.C. c1923 and resided in New Westminster after Jan, 1925. When Charles' died on Jan 10, 1927 at the age of 48 [54?] his profession is listed as Salesman. Florence remarried on Jan 14, 1928 to Clarence Rothermal 'Clare' KINSEY. She died in New Westminster on Oct 06, 1954 at the age of 70 years. Charles and Florence are buried together in the Church of England section of the Fraser Cemetery [no stones] in New Westminster. Clare remarried to Mary Eliza HELPS. He died in Kelowna, B.C. in 1971 at the age of 90 years.

Florence's mother Clara passed away in Swan River RD, Manitoba in 1919 and her father Robert relocated to B.C. c1935. He died in Burnaby in 1955 at the age of 97 years, and his body was returned to Bowsman, MB for burial.

William C. SANDRY married Dorothy BENNETT, daughter of Henry BENNETT and Elizabeth Ann FITTON. William & Dorothy made their home in Vancouver, B.C. They never had children. At the time of his death on Jun 29, 1981 William's profession is listed as Driver - Burnaby Municipality. Dorothy predeceased William on Dec 07, 1974. William & Dorothy are entombed together in The Abbey [7 1583 Moses], Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby, B.C.

Dorothy (Bennett) SANDRY has an unmarried sister Helen, a married brother Henry, a niece Julie Anne and at least 1 grand-nephew and 1 grand-niece.

Notes from Gordon Gibson, April 2005:

A Certified True Copy of the Manitoba marriage registration [WPG - Reg. No. 1907,001588] of 'Charle Sandry' and 'Florence Pitheran' was obtained in Apr/2005. On it, Charles names his parents as 'Charles Sandry' and 'Lydia Poole' - thus confirming that the Charles SANDREY/SANDRYs above are the same person! It remains to be seen if any of the PETHERAM descendents in Bowsman, MB have a photo of Charles SANDRY resembling Roger's photo of his grandfather ...all 6' 4" of him! :-) -gg
