WILLIAM W. KEARNS

William Warren Kearns came to Saskatchewan from Ontario with his mother and brother, Jim, arriving at "Mount Nebo", the farm of his stepfather, Thomas Sanderson, five miles south of the present site of Kinistino. They had travelled by wagon from Fort Qu'Appelle to the sod-roofed shanty, their new home, on the east side of Water Hen Lake. While Jim attended school in Prince Albert, Will and his mother spent four months of their first winter along, looking after the stock on the farm.

He spent the next few years working around the district for his stepfather and other settlers. In the late nineties, he accompanied a party travelling by wagon-train back to the States as far as his uncle's in Manitoba. Here he was thwarted in an attempt to join the recruits to the Boer War, when his train from the wood camp missed connections. Greatly disappointed, he now decided to go "West" - eventually, spending time in and around Calgary. Here, he met Lila Jane Holbrook, an Ontario girl, whom he married in 1904.

Kinistino was home for a few years. They built a house (still standing), became parents of a daughter, Jean. Having been previously employed by Bell Telephone Company, when the offer of work came from Vancouver, he accepted. He spent several years as foreman of construction crews, building many miles of telephone lines in and around the city. Lila was chief operator of the Eburne Telephone Exchange during this period.

In 1911, the call of the land brought the family, with the addition of a son, Tom, and another daughter, Alma, back to Saskatchewan and farming. They settled on a quarter, two miles south and two miles east of town. Dave arrived, to add to the family while they lived here. Will became involved in telephones again. He was responsible for the construction, and later, the maintenance, of the first telephone lines throughout the area. He was also one of the founding members of the first "Grain Growers' Association", and helped to build their hall, which is now on the Rodeo grounds. Mrs. Robert Paynter helped Lila conduct Sunday School in this building for many years.

Another move, in 1920, to the Ethelton district. Will continued his telephone activity, served as councillor in Flett's Springs Rural Municipality for many terms, and assisted in promotion of the Kearns School District. William Radke bought the Ethelton farm, and the Kearns family moved to the Peace River to pioneer again.

William and Lila spent almost twenty years in the Montney Valley before retiring to live in Fort St. John, B.C. in 1958. They both played an active part in the development of this new land. Lila passed away very suddenly in February 1961; Will reached 98 years, 8 mos. - his death coming in June 1972.

Of the family, Dave lives on his original homestead (just across the road from the Kearns' home farm). Alma married E.A. Holden, and they, too, live on their first farm, two miles east of the Montney Village. Tom spent thirty-five years with Transcontinental Petroleum Company in South America, retiring in Toronto a few years ago. Jean lives in the city now, after many years on the farm at Montney.
