James CARPENTER [Parents] "Jim" was born in 1840 in Cruwys Morchard, Devon, England. He died on 28 Jul 1895 in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. He married 1 Eliza MOGG on 08 Sep 1865 in Holy Trinity, Kelso, New South Wales, Australia.

Found as a stowaway aboard ship en route to Australia.
Trained as a cook on his voyage out (5 months). Arrived Sydney c.1860 and headed for the goldfields around Mudgee.
Lived with the Mogg family and was useful as a cook/kitchen hand.
Married their daughter, Eliza and moved to Bathurst.
Opened a confectionery/bakery shop in George Street, Bathurst called Carpenter's Bakery.
Died in 1895 and Jim took over as Master Baker.

Eliza MOGG [Parents] was born 1 on 31 Mar 1844 in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. She died in 1918 in Wellington, New South Wales, Australia. Descended from the infamous buccaneer "Billy" Mogg.
Parents farmed in Mudgee and employed a cook called James Carpenter.
James was to become the favourite son-in-law and marry Eliza.
She became the backbone and financial manager of Carpenters Bakery, George St. Bathurst.
After James died (1895) she lived with her daughter, Ethel in Wellington NSW until her death in 1918

A true character, in the Aussie sense. Always had a joke and was a joker himself.
Fred was a boy at heart and never grew up.
A sports lover, ie always played tennis or bowls.
The story goes that he was telling a joke at the bowling club after buying his mates a round of drinks (which he always enjoyed) he laughed jovially, put his head down, and died peacefully at the table.
