Louis Seager CARPENTER [Parents] was born on 31 Oct 1914 in New Zealand. He died on 10 Oct 1984. He married Margaret JOHNSTONE on 15 Feb 1931.
Louis served 18 years as a board member and 6 years as chairman of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board, New Zealand (he was elected unopposed to fill the board vacancy left by his father Alfred Money Carpenter upon AMC's death in 1959). Louis retired due to ill health in 1970.
He also held various offices of the local branch of the Federated Farmers and was chairman of the North Canterbury Veterinary Club.
He farmed part of the family homestead block at Fernside for many years before moving to Rangiora in 1973. He was also a member of the Rangiora Lions Club.
Margaret JOHNSTONE died in 1990. She married Louis Seager CARPENTER on 15 Feb 1931.

ALFRED MONEY CARPENTER
Alfred was born on 6th October 1882 in Tiverton, Devon. He was the 5th son of William Baker & Maria Symons (nee Were) Carpenter, of Great Bradley Farm, Withleigh, Tiverton, Devon.At the end of 1888, after the death of William's father James Tucker Carpenter, the family sold Great Bradley to a relative, a Mr. Waller, and moved to Dymock, Gloucestershire where William rented Hill Farm from Squire Thackwell. Whilst at Hill Farm Alfred attended Dymock School which had a Master and Miss Hodges as teachers. Whilst there, he won a Scripture prize.
In the early 1890's William gave up at Hill Farm and the family moved to Ludlow, Shropshire. At about this time the eldest son James returned home having completed his apprenticeship in the butchery trade, and he and his father, William, set up as partners in a butchers business, living over the shop, which was next to the Post Office in Castle Street, and had at one time been the Sun Hotel. It would appear that they also undertook some form of milk distribution. Whilst in Ludlow Alfred attended the Commercial School in Mill Street where the Head Master was a Mr. Thomas and there was also a Mr. Downs and a Mr. Powis. This was a difficult time for Alfred as he was expected to help move animals from the auction market and deliver orders to the large country houses in the surrounding area. He also spoke of having to help staff a branch shop in the village of Clee Hill, some 5 miles from Ludlow, all of which made his attendances erratic. When he was about 12 years old (1894) he was sent to Havant near Portsmouth to start an apprenticeship with a Mr. Whicher who had a farm business, which shipped cattle and sheep. In 1896/7 he moved to work for a Mr. G.W. Peel, who had an established purveyors business in Portsea and a farm at Wymering, supplying ships with live and dead stock. Mr. Peel died and Mrs. Peel asked Alfred to take charge of stock coming in and out and to assist, and supervise, the dressing of meat; he was 15 years old at this time. He seems to have stayed in the Portsmouth Area for a few years as his notes indicate that he was still in the Portsmouth area in 1899. Shortly after the close of the South African War and the death of Queen Victoria he left Portsmouth, going to Woking, Surrey with Mr. Ernie Marshall who had a butcher's business there.
Alfred's job was shop-man and to solicit fresh customers who were building new homes in this progressive area. It was here, he says, that he came into contact with a good class of people and obtained their patronage, such as Whittaker Wright who presented his employees with a joint of beef for Xmas. Whittaker Wright sent from his farm eight Devon steers, which were killed, for him, cut up into joints, then sent to his Witley Court Estate for distribution. A Christmas Pudding and a parcel of groceries were added to this and then presented to each member of his huge staff employed to farm and care for his 4000 acre farm.
The growth and success of the business at Woking soon necessitated the enlargement of the premises and Alfred was placed in charge of this. This in turn further extended the business. Alfred says that Mr. Marshall and Alfred's eldest brother (must be Jim) were apprenticed together with Mr. Jas Gale of Kings Street, Southsea who was a cousin of Alfred's mother (Maria S. nee Were) and that he was very happy at Woking enjoying lots of trust and being left in sole charge whilst Mr. Marshall enjoyed quite a lot of shooting on his father's farm at Rogate near Petersfield, Hants. Alfred says that about this time his grandmother (must have been Sarah Were d.18.1.1902) died at Tiverton, Devonshire, and that his mother with Alfred's youngest brother and sister, who were still at school, were living with her. He says that his mother asked Alfred to take a business in Tiverton to make a home for her and the children. Which he did, apprenticing the boy to an ironmonger and the girl to the drapery, on their leaving school.
Thus the next we hear of him is in 1906 as a butcher in Tiverton (see photograph of his shop) where he, and others including Mr. Peter Were, were involved in a 'Bad Meat' case which resulted in a fatality. Before the court case was finally closed Mr. Were had died (Feb.1909) and Alfred had sold the Tiverton butchers business. Alfred says that an older brother (must be Jim or Robert) asked him to join them in business at Ludlow, Shropshire as the brother had been advised by his doctor to take things easier. In the Tiverton Gazette of 29th September 1908 and subsequent issues dated 6th & 13th October 1908 there appears an advertisement indicating that Alfred has sold his butcher's business in Gold Street, Tiverton to Mr. George Newcombe Pope. There was mention of Alfred and one of his brothers being partners in a tin mine but I don't know which brother or where the mine was.
Whilst in Tiverton Alfred married Annie Caroline Myland of Basingstoke, Hampshire (28th December 1904) who he had met whilst at Woking, and their first child, Marjorie Grace was born on 28th October 1905, and their second child, Frank Alfred John, was born on the 27th July 1908, both in Tiverton.
Alfred says he joined his brother in Ludlow and remained with him for some time until his brother had recuperated at which point he bought a business in Wellington, Shropshire that proved to be a very successful venture and where he built up a good trade. It was here (Wellington), one Monday morning in December 1909, that Alfred received a telegram from the Mayor of Tiverton asking him to go to Tiverton to see him as he had received a cable from Alfred's aunt in Christchurch, New Zealand to say that Alfred's uncle, Alfred Walter Money, had been killed in a tram accident and the aunt wanted the Mayor to find Alfred and send him out to her (his mother's half sister) in New Zealand to help her run her husband's various businesses as they had no family of their own. He packed and in a few days joined the S.S. Arawa at Plymouth for New Zealand via Cape Town, where he arrived on New Years Day 1910 and Wellington, New Zealand in early January. Alfred says he spent many happy months being introduced to the Chamberlains, Wrights and Ansteys, who were his next-door neighbors when he was on the farm at Great Bradley, Withleigh, Devon where he was born.
In August 1910 Alfred's aunt passed away and his wife, Annie Caroline, sold his business in Wellington, Shropshire, England and, with their two children, went to join him in New Zealand in September 1910, sailing on the Athenic.
It took some months for Alfred to clear up his aunt's estate, but in 1912 Alfred bought a farm of some 250(?) acres at Flaxton some 16 miles from Christchurch. He says it took him some time to get used to sowing wheat in May when it would just have been coming into a head at home (UK). The First World War of 1914 - 1918 broke out soon after Alfred had started farming taking much of New Zealand's surplus labour into the army and so he was very glad to have Marjorie and Frank to help with the threshing. This labour shortage got worse when an influenza epidemic struck killing so many that furniture vans were used to take the bodies to mass graves, and schools were turned into hospitals.
It was whilst Alfred & Annie were at Flaxton that Louis (b.31.10.1914) and their youngest daughter (Evelyn b.3rd Jan. 1916) were born but, before leaving The Home, Evelyn contracted perondinitis and did not go home until April. During that same year Louis contracted diphtheria and Marjorie had rheumatic fever.
During the Second World War Alfred sent many food parcels to Portsmouth and monetary donations to charity. Alfred came to London for the Queens Coronation in 1953, and was invited to attend a luncheon at London' Guild Hall where he met Alderman R.E. Whittington, a descendent of Dick Whittington, who was Lord Mayor of London when John Carpenter was Town Clerk (1417 - 1438). John was a personal friend of the famous Sir Richard Whittington, and was appointed executor of his will. It was this same John Carpenter who was instrumental in starting Trusts to enable the setting up of the City of London School, which still exists today.
Shortly after his return to New Zealand Alfred was advised that he had been nominated to receive the Freedom of the City of London, and was presented with the Freedom of the City of London in May 1954.
Alfred made a request for his own Coat of Arms and on the 21st December 1956, in the 5th year of the reign of Elizabeth II, it was granted (see appendix).
On the 4th November 1959 Alfred Money Carpenter died leaving behind two sons and two daughters - Frank Alfred John (d.10.6.1995), Louis Seager (d.10.10.1984), Marjorie Grace (d.28.2.2001), and Evelyn Annie Minnie (d.12.1.1968).
