----------------------------------------------------------
From "The House That WERE Built", by Eric Were, Adelaide, Australia.Charles was the eighth son of George and Mary Ann Were, and was born on 31st October 1859 at Lower Curham, near Halberton, Devon. Raised in a comfortably situated household, Charles had the benefit of an education - somthing denied to many of the young people of the era. George Were carried on farming activities, and no doubt it was during his youthful years at home that son Charles learned the skills of butchering.
When elder brother James returned fro New Zealand in 1878 to be married, he would have had glowing stories to tell of life and opportunites in the "Land of the Long White Cloud". Charles was 18 yrs. old and ready for adventure and it did not take much persuasion for him and his younger brother, William Henry, to join the newly weds on the voyage to New Zealand.
The party of five (including James' brother-in-law Hedley Abbott) boarded the ship "Piako" in Plymouth on 5th October 1878 and six days later sailed out of Plymouth Sound and onto the high seas. Three weeks out from port, Charles celebrated his 19th birthday and eleven days later the "Piako" caught fire off the coast of Brazil. (The story of this near-disaster is told in James' biographical notes.)
It was while the Weres were waiting at Pernambuco for the refitting of their ship, that Charles formed an attachment with future wife, Dorcas Dunn. Dorcas was Cornish lass and was born at St. Ives on 2nd September1859. Re-embarking on the now seaworthy "Piako", the would be colonists arrived at the port of Lyttelton, N.Z. on 5th March 1879 - 145 days out from Plymouth.
Charles did not go farming in New Zealand like his brothers, but earned his living for many years at his butchering trade. Little is known of his early days in the new land, but on 11th July 1882 he married Dorcas Dunn at Timaru, and their first child was born at Christchurch. While Charles made the Christchurch district his base for much of his life, the birthplaces of his 13 children (born between 1883 and 1902) show such locations as Kaiapoi, Palmerston North, Taradale and Gisborne.
During his residence at Palmerston North, Charles operated his own butcher shop. He was later a slaughterman at Taradale, near Napier, and then an employee of the Gisborne freezing works. In 1888 Charles Were and family were living in Proctor Street, Papanue (Christchurch) and for many years the directories listed him as a butcher at various local addresses. From 1917 onwards the family address was 21 Pananui Road - an address which saw a change in Charles' business activities.
About 1909-10, the Were Brothers Cordial Manufacturers business was begun. Charles' sons Martin and Jim, worked the business in the beginning - Martin having gained knowledge of the trade at Barry's Cordial Manufacturers. Charles joined his sons in the soft drink business and later operated it with his son John. It was while Charles was working one of the machines in the cordial factory (9th April 1929) that he died suddenly at the age of 70. (Four and a half years before his death he had suffered a crushed chest in a car accident, the effects of which had continued to trouble him.) His wife Dorcas had predeceased him by four years. She passed away on 3rd September 1925, while on a visit to Mackay, Queensland. She was 66 years old.
Charles Were enjoyed successes and suffered reverses during hislifetime. He held shares in a gold mining venture which failed to live up to expectations. At one time he had an interest Trotting, and was a member of the Owners and Breeders Association. Charles is remembered as an upright man and a strict father who successfully raised a large family, sometimes in difficult times - which in itself can be counted a fine achievement.

Buried in Family Vault, Tiverton, Devon, England. The full obituary to Robert Were, in the Tiverton Gazette & East Devon Herald 18 Aug 1863 p2c5:
Our readers will some of them be prepared for the announcement that Mr. Robert Were, Jr., the proprietor of this paper from its commencement, is now no more. After a long and varying illness, he died almost suddenly at Sidmouth, to which place he had gone, by medical advice, for the benefit of his health. In life respected, and in death beloved, his constant aim while here was to be of service to the public at large. In religion his spirit was truly Catholic, rejoicing in the prosperity of every denomination of Christians. In politics he was liberal, and anxious to promote the cause of Reform and Retrenchment, where it could be safely done without injury to the noble constitution under which we have the privilege to live. Any further remarks on his character would be out of place here; but his removal has left a blank in the hearts of his sorrowing widow, parents, and friends, which it is impossible for anything earthly to fill. His remains were yesterday interred in the family vault, at the Cemetery, and several friends of the deceased, in addition to near and dear relatives, followed him to the grave.
