The Division of Allergic Diseases was established in 1923, and has become one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Our long commitment to the research and treatment of bronchial asthma dates back to 1950 when, immediately after the discoveryof glucocorticoids at the Mayo Clinic, the allergy consultants, Dr. Haddon Carryer, Dr. Giles Koelsche, Dr. Louis Prickman, and Dr. Charles Maytum, were the first in the world to demonstratethe benefit of these medications in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma. Since then, the Division of Allergic Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester has been at the forefront of research in bronchialasthma, especially with regard to the use of anti-inflammatory medications to treat this disease.
