----------------------------------------------------------Notes from John Carpenter:
ROBERT WERE CARPENTER
Robert Were Carpenter was born on 1st June 1877 at Great Bradley Farm, Withleigh, Tiverton, Devon. He was the 3rd son of William Baker Carpenter and Maria Symons Carpenter (nee Were). His parents continued to live at Great Bradley until just after the death of Robert's grandfather, James Tucker Carpenter, in 1883. Around late 1888 William sold Great Bradley and the family moved to live at Hill Farm, Dymock, Gloucestershire, which William rented from Squire Thackwell. Whilst here Robert was expected to milk the cows by hand before he went to school and on his return, and it was probably because of this that he was such a speedy milker. The milk was not only used for the house but Robert's mother, Maria, also made butter which she sold in the local market at Ledbury.
At this time James, Robert's eldest brother, was serving his apprenticeship as a butcher, which he would have completed in the late 1890's. This was around the time that William and his family (that now included John Seymour Carpenter and Gweneth Leslie Carpenter) moved again, this time to Ludlow.
In Ludlow Robert's father, with his son James, opened a butcher's shop in what used to be the Sun Hotel in Castle Square, next to the Old Post Office, and the family lived in the flat over the shop. It was probably here that Robert Were learned butchering by helping in the shop. Robert later set up butchering on his own, initially it is understood, from a small shop on the corner of Castle Square and Quality Square, but certainly by 1901 he was operating from 14 High Street, Ludlow.
On the 3rd June 1901 Robert married Sarah Jane ROGERS in Ludlow Parish Church. It was a double wedding service, the other couple being Sarah's eldest sister, Elizabeth, who married David Cumming CAMPBELL. Sarah Jane's address was shown as The Raven Inn, Ludlow and her father, whose name was Edwin ROGERS, was recorded as already dead. The witnesses were Frank CARPENTER and Louisa ROGERS. On the wedding certificate Robert is shown as Master Butcher living at 14 High Street, Ludlow.
Robert and Sarah had five children, 3 boys William Henry (Harry) b.1902; Robert (Roy) b.1904 at 1 Friar's Terrace, Ludlow; Humphrey Were b.1917; and two girls Kathleen Mary b.1911; and Edith Grace (Loveday) b.1915. Robert continued working as a butcher for several years, but an accident which left him with a weak back, forced him to consider a change of occupation, and in 1913 he moved to The Lodge Farm, Bromfield, which is some 5 miles north of Ludlow, letting the shop and business to a Mr. Babbage who continued with the business until Robert's son, also Robert but known as Roy, had finished his apprenticeship at which time Roy took over.
On the 29th May 1919 Robert purchased, at auction from The Downton Castle Estate, The Old Lodge, which consisted of a pair of cottages, two enclosed barns, and just over 32 acres of pasture land, for £1000. He was now considered to be a gentleman farmer.
In the First World War, 1914-1918 Robert purchased fat stock to order for the butchers and was afterwards rewarded for his efforts by being given a Chest of Silver Cutlery, (now 2001 in the posession of Edward, son of Robert's eldest son William Henry [Harry]). [see more about this later].
Robert took on the post of Farm Manager for The Downton Castle Estate in 1926 and held the post until 1935.
Whilst Robert and Sarah were living at The Lodge Farm the last two of their children, Edith Grace, and Humphrey Were CARPENTER were born. Unfortunately Edith died in 1932 when she was only 17 years old. She had suffered with deteriorating eyesight for several years and was blind at the time of her death. Both Robert and Sarah were, understandably, very upset by their loss and to try to lift their spirits undertook a visit to Robert's brothers and sisters who had emigrated to Canada some years earlier.
Robert was a Free Mason, and at one time was Master of two Lodges.
He died on 8th February 1939 of a) peritonitis & b) carcinoma of sigmoid colon following an operation in a Birmingham Hospital. He is buried in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church, Bromfield.
LUDLOW PRESENTATION
Mr. R. Carpenter - the farmer's Grader. On Tuesday evening a complimentary dinner was given to Mr. Robert Carpenter at The Feathers Hotel, Ludlow. About a hundred sat down under the Chairmanship of Mr. H.E. Whittaker, Ludford Park who was supported by Mr. D.P. John the Vice Chairman and Major H.C. Meredith. The Charman said he had a very pleasing task to perform that night in making a presentation to Mr. Robert Carpenter for the very great services he had rendered to the whole farming community during the war. The Government, when prices of meat got so high, fixed the prices and appointed graders to grade the cattle, and they allowed the farmers to appoint a grader to represent them. It was practically an unpaid job, the fees allowed being out of pocket expenses. Mr. Carpenter was appointed the farmer's grader, and they in the Ludlow District were particularly fortunate in having a man of Mr. Carpenter's ability. His technical knowledge was worth a great amount. He stood up to the Government Graders, and could tell them he knew more about meat than they did. He could point out to them the various good points about cattle and sheep. He had to grade from 200-300 and up to 400 cattle every fortnight, and in order to show their appreciation of Mr. Carpenter's services, he was asked that night to present him with a case of cutlery and silver plate - 90 pieces - all engraved with his initials. Mr. Carpenter, in responding, said he could hardly find words to express his thanks to them for having made him that handsome present. He, as farmer's grader, did not expect it, and when he heard it was coming off he hardly knew whether to accept it. The work he had done he did for his greatest friends. He had only been a farmer himself for a short time, but he came from a stock of farmers, and when he was asked to take the post he said he would do the best he could. He learned all his fat stock from Mr. Edward Small. When he started grading he found he was up against men sent by the commissioners who were opposed to him. He did not do the grading for certain men only. He did it for the little man with a few cattle as well as for the man who had 200. He wished to remind them that the farmer's grader was the man who was actually selling their cattle for them if he had not done it they would have been pinched. He was pleased he had had the confidence of the farmers and he hoped that it had not been misplaced. He had heard it said that as farmer's grader he used it to make money for himself (cries of shame). If any man could say that he had taken one copper from any other man he would forfeit all he had. He took the job on for them and had done it to the best of his ability, and it was a shame to say that he took money as a farmer's grader. If he had given satisfaction he was satisfied. He would always prize the things they had given him and thanked them very much. (There was applause).

THE CANADIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY
MANITOBA DIVISIONHONORARY MEMBERSHIP - Presented to Mr. Frank Carpenter.
It was Mr. Frank Carpenter who, in 1943, organised the first Disaster Services Committee of the Manitoba Division Canadian Red Cross Society and who, since that date, has served as Chairman of that committee.
His duties have been arduous indeed. Red Cross relief work during the Manitoba floods of 1948 and 1950 is now history, and it was under Mr. Carpenter's direction that this work was carried on. During both periods Mr. Carpenter gave all his time and energy to Red Cross.
During the spring and summer of 1950, from early April until the middle of July, Mr. Carpenter spent long hours, seven days a week, directing the efforts of some 4000 volunteers.
In the battle with the river Mr. Carpenter was occasionally 'in the thick of it'. His duties were vast and complex, but his devotion never failed. His unflagging vigour, determination and courage not only solved many difficult situations but inspired those working with him to what - at times - seemed superhuman effort.
As chairman of the Disaster Services Committee, Manitoba Division, for the past eight years, Mr. Carpenter played a vital role in the Society's work during very critical periods in the life of the community.
Sarah 'Edith' DAVIE [Parents] was born 1, 2 on 24 Sep 1886 in Cannington, Brock, Ontario, Ontario, Canada. She died 3 on 06 Feb 1975 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
