Hugh MATHESON [Parents] was born about 1685 in Brechat, Sutherland, Scotland. He died after 1723.
Notes from Mac C. Matheson:
#1 - It is known that the descendents of Hugh Matheson of Lairg, who married Catherine Munro, are relatives to Captain Donald Matheson, grandson of Neil.
#2 - Family tradition of the Matheson families of Utah indicate that the father of Hugh who married Catherine Munro was also named Hugh.
#3 - Because of the time frame of known and imputed births, it was first thought that this Hugh was a son of Neil, the grandfather of Capt. Donald Matheson of Shiness. However, later research (See notes on Father's Record) of Land Rents Records almost certainly points to the fact that Hugh was a younger son of John Matheson, Chief of the Shiness Mathesons, and a brother of Donald Matheson who became the Chief of Clan, and greatgrandfather of Captain Donald Matheson.
#4 - As further evidence of this connection, there is a note on Page 141 of the Second Edition of "History of The Mathesons" published in 1900 which reads as follows: "The leading man or chief of the Braechat or Lairg Mathesons in 1715 was evidently John Matheson, for the Earl of Sutherland in writing to his son about raising his forces against the rebels tells him to communicate with the leading man or men in each district, and in regard to Braechat, he says: - 'Write to Mr. Mackay and John Matheson about the Breachat men.' This John may have been Donald's father. - Ed." Thus John is the "Missing Link" between Colonel George Matheson and Donald Matheson, making the line complete from the earliest known Sutherland Mathesons to the present day.
#5 - The present Chief of the Clan Matheson Society (1999), Sir Fergus John Matheson of Matheson, traces his ancestry to both the Mathesons of Lochalsh and the Mathesons of Shiness (Sutherland). His great-grandmother, Margaret, daughter of Captain Donald Matheson of Shiness and sister of Sir James, who made is fortune as a partner in the trading firm of Jardine, Matheson & Co. of Hong Kong, married her cousin, John of Localsh, thus linking the two lines together.

John MATHESON [Parents] was born about 1530 in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
Notes from Mac C. Matheson:
BIRTH: Imputed from information in Hist. & Gen. of The Mathesons, Pg 49-50. - Known among Highlanders as "Ian Gallach" or John of Caithness. Said to be son of Donald Ban Matheson who had fled to Caithness for protection from his step-father, Macleod, who was "lording it so haughtily in Lochalsh". Donald Ban had gotten the daughter of the Earl of Caithness "with child". She had then fled to Lochalsh where tradition says John was born at the roadside between Erbusaig and Balmacarra.
