John MATHESON [Parents] was born about 1642 in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland. He died after 1723 in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland. He was married about 1666.

Notes from Mac C. Matheson:

BIRTH: See Hist. & Gen. of The Matheson, Pg. 51. The author states that the only head of family after Col. George that anything is known about is Donald who took an active part on the side of the government in 1715 who must have been a grandson or great-grandson. The most logical assumption because of the time covered would be that there was only one generation intervening.
#2 - According to research performed by John M. Kitzmiller II, Accredited Genealogist with Richard W. Price & Associates of 57 West South Temple, Suite 300, Salt Lake City, Utah 84147, this John is the father of Hugh Matheson who was born about 1670, and a younger brother to the unnamed Chief of Clan, son of Colonel George Matheson listed in The History and Genealogy of the Mathesons, written by Alexander McKenzie and published in 1882.
#3 - This recent research shows that there was only one generation seperating Col. George from Donald. As further evidence of this, on page 141 of the Second Edition of "The History of The Mathesons" published in 1900 in a foot note concerning Donald the Editor quotes a letter from the Earl of Sutherland about contacting the leading men of each district, and that his son should write John Matheson about the Breachat men. The Editor states this John may have been Donald's father, indicating that John was the unnamed Chief of Clan stated in the original record. We believe these are the facts. See notes for Hugh Matheson of the next generation.

He had the following children:

M i Donald MATHESON was born about 1675 in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland. He died about 1745 in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland.
  M ii Hugh MATHESON
M iii Hector MATHESON was born about 1687 in Brechat, Sutherland, Scotland. He died after 1722.
M iv Robert MATHESON was born after 1689 in Brechat, Sutherland, Scotland. He died after 1720.
M v John MATHESON was born about 1691 in Brechat, Sutherland, Scotland. He died after 1720.
M vi Alexander MATHESON was born about 1693 in Brechat, Sutherland, Scotland. He died after 1716.
M vii Angus MATHESON was born about 1695 in Troboll, Sutherland, Scotland.

Col. George MATHESON [Parents] was born about 1590 in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland.

Notes from Mac C. Matheson:

BIRTH: Imputed from information in Hist. & Gen. of The Mathesons, Pg. 51.

NOTE: This George Matheson of Shiness in 1626 accompanied Sir Donald Mackay of Farr to the wars of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Denmark, and rose to rank of Colonel. He returned to Scotland 5 Oct 1639 from Denmark and matriculated his arms in the Lyon Office, describing himself as Colonel George Matheson. Probably did not marry until after returning from Denmark. Believe he was succeeded as head of Mathesons of Shiness by his son, not named in the text, and in turn by his grandson Donald, who is named in the text, and who fought on side of government in 1715.

He had the following children:

  M i John MATHESON

John MATHESON [Parents] was born about 1560 in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland.

Notes from Mac C. Matheson:

BIRTH: See Hist. & Gen. of The Mathesons, Pgs. 49-51. Known as "John Matheson of Shiness", he was son of John known as "Ian Gallach" or "John of Caithness" who settled on the lands along the North-east side of Loch Shin in Sutherlandshire. NOTE: Listed in Sir Robert Gordon's Earldom of Sutherland as "John Mak-ean Mak-Konald wain [John son of John, son of Donald Ban], who dwelleth now in Cinenes [Shiness], and is at this day [1639], Cheiff of the tryb of Seilwohan [Siol Mhhathoin] in Southerland."
