Sir William Congreve, 2nd Baronet
From 'Dictionary of National Biography' (1887) Leslie Stephen Ed., vol. XII:
CONGREVE, Sir WILLIAM (1772- 1828), the inventor of the Congreve rocket, was the eldest son of Sir William Congreve, lieutenant-general, colonel commandant of the royal artillery, comptroller of the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich, and superintendent of military machines, who was created a baronet on 7 Dec. 1812. He was born on 20 May 1772, and, after passing through the Royal Academy at Woolwich, entered the royal artillery as a second lieutenant in 1791. He was at once attached to the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich, of which his father was comptroller, and after many experiments there he succeeded in inventing the celebrated Congreve rocket in 1808. The war office and board of ordnance, influenced doubtless by his father's strong recommendations, determined to make use of this invention for military purposes, and highly applauded its inventor. The first trial of its efficacy was made at sea, in Lord Cochrane's attempt to burn the French fleet in the Basque roads in 1809. Its success was not so great as had been expected, but its value was perceived, and the ingenious inventor was largely recompensed and allowed to raise and organise two rocket companies in connection with the corps of royal artillery. He was chosen a fellow of the Royal Society, and elected M.P. for Gatton in 1812, and in the December of the same year his father was created a baronet. In the following year he was ordered with one of his rocket companies to the continent, and served at the battle of Leipzig. His rockets there did not do much actual damage to the enemy, but their noise and bright glare had a great effect in frightening the French and throwing them into confusion, and the czar of Russia showed his appreciation of the inventor by making him a knight of the order of St. Anne. They had the same negative effect in the passage of the Bidassoa, where, Napier remarks, they did little real damage, but caused terror by their novelty. In April 1814 he succeeded his father as second baronet, and also as comptroller of the Royal Laboratory and superintendent of military machines, a post which he held until his death. He was a great personal favourite with George IV, who on his accession to the throne made him one of his equerries, and also held a high position in scientific circles. He wrote many economical and scientific works, and sat as M.P. for Plymouth from 1820 until his death at Toulouse on 16 May 1828.
The following is a list of Congreve's published works : 1. 'A Concise Account of the Origin and Progress of the Rocket System," 1807. 2. ' Description of the Hydro-pneumatic Lock, invented by Colonel Congreve,' 1814. 3.' Of the Impracticability of the Resumption of Cash Payments,' 1819. 4.' Principles on which it appears that a more Perfect System of Currency maybe formed either in the Precious or Non-Precious Metals,' 1819. 6. ' A Short Account of a Patent lately taken out by Sir William Congreve for a New Principle of Steam Engine,' 1819. 6. 'A Treatise on the General Principles, Powers, and Facility of Application of the Congreve Rocket System, as compared with Artillery,' 1827.

JONES, CLARENCE (CLARY) AND EMILY
Clarence (Clary) Jones was born April 5, 1914 on a farm 7 miles north of Pelly, the second in a family of nine. Our family moved to the Ormside district north of Stenen in the late 1920's.
Florence Emily Dunford was born February 7, 1904 at Russell, Man., the eldest in a family of four. The family moved to the Goldbank district north of Stenen in 1919. Emily and Lloyd Chase were married in 1925 and they had five children, Wilma, Allan, Ken, Frank and Adrian. Lloyd passed away and I married Emily in 1938. We had a daughter, Shirley, and a son, Garnet. We farmed in the Ormside district and to supplement our income I worked at sawmills during the winters, leaving Emily home to look after the kids and the chores. We sold out in 1946 and moved into Stenen and that summer I sawed for Pinkerton Bros. at Bertwell and that winter for McGillis and Granberg. We moved to Hyas and I worked for John Taylor, the John Deere dealer.
In the spring of 1950 I moved a land-clearing outfit to Prairie River where there was lots of clearing to be done. The first clearing we did was for Elvin Doyle on the SW 2-45-7 and the following year I bought this quarter from Elvin. The ground was still pretty soft for heavy clearing, so we moved south to the Muskeegan district and started on Ed Dobrowski's land. We worked around the district most of the summer and then back to Prairie River and cleared until freezeup. We bought Fred Bassett's house in town and in the spring of 1952 moved the family up. We moved early in the spring and while we were at Hyas getting a truck and loading, the weather turned real warm and when we got back to Somme the road north was flooded and impassable for a large truck. We had to leave our furniture in Somme until the roads dried up.
Wilma and Allan had both left home and went to Washington where Wilma married David Houston, a machinist for Skagitt Corporation. He is still with the Company; they live in Sedro Woolley and raised three children.
Allan spent over 23 years in the American Army, got married and they raised a family of seven. They live in Tacoma and Allan works for the Post Office Dept.
Frank ran a Model D John Deere on a breaking outfit at Prairie River, then went to Edmonton and worked for a Schlumberger for almost 20 years. He left the company and he and partner started Stratta Service Corporation, cement plug logging. He married Alma Sahnle and they have two boys.
We cleared whenever it was fit, and sometimes when it wasn't, and started farming a bit in 1952. The road west, Highway No. 3 was a slightly graded bush trail as was the highway south to the settlement and when it rained, which it seemed to fairly often, it was real mud. My first summer there I spent a couple of nights on the road with the fenders plugged so the wheels couldn't turn. In the spring of 1951 I bought an army jeep which was a big help.
In 1952 the Department of Agriculture opened a block of land from Prairie River to Bannock and south to the settlement for 33-year leases. We were fortunate in getting a lease on the E1/2 36-44-8 and I also got one of the first clearing contracts in the block with the Department. This was for clearing 50 acres on each half section in my contract. There were no roads in to the block, only lines cut between some sections, and where we couldn't use these we had to cut our own roads. I used the jeep to haul fuel and supplies to the operators. Some of my first operators were Melvin Thompson, Homen Kendall, Hugo Roller, Joe Schekk, Ken Chase and John Rohel. Kendall's Garage was where we got our fuel, oil and welding done those first years.
I believe it was in 1953 the Department brought in a drag line and started a ditch from Bannock to Prairie River on the north side of No. 3 highway. This ditch was a great help as it cut off water which flowed from the north to the Red Deer River. They leveled the dirt from the ditch, making a better road. It was later graded and is now paved. They also ditched from No. 3 highway two miles south between ranges 7 and 8 and then back west again. It was so wet they had to use pads under the drag line and hauled supplies to the outfit at times with a half track.
In 1953 Harry Marsh of Mistatim and myself formed the partnership of Marsh and Jones, and we started logging and sawing lumber for E.C. Dawley Co. on the old Cormorant Lake timber berth in Manitoba. Being able to work in the winters helped to keep the payments up those years it was wet and we couldn't get much clearing done. I bought a TD40 Cat for breaking, and farming. Also put a front-end loader on it and used it to load logs onto trucks and sleighs.
1955 was wetter than usual and it was a real problem getting off the bit of crop there was. One farmer mounted his binder on skids, powered it with an air-cooled motor and pulled it with a Cat. Another with a pull-type combine put skids under and pulled it with two small Cats. We had a Case pull-type, and welded a wide steel wheel on the grain tank side to help hold it up, and got along good pulling it with the TD40. After we got our crop off, Bill Kozak bought the combine to take his crop off and also some for neighbors. That year Ken and Sarah left and moved to Campbell River, B.C. where Derek was born and where they still live. Ken is a Foreman at the Elk Falls sawmill.
Frost was a problem some years and one year we got hailed real bad and no insurance. From then on we always insured for hail but never got hailed again. There were several other clearing outfits which worked in the area as well as ours, so the bush disappeared quite rapidly and in a very few years we were able to see the lights of Porcupine Plain.
Adrian joined the Air Force and moved to Quebec. He later quit the Air Force and got married. He studied property assessment, at which he now works. They have one daughter and he lives in Dryden, Ont.
In 1958 Marsh and Jones worked for the Department on the road north of Hudson Bay to The Pas and also bulldozed right-of-way that winter.
In 1959 Shirley married Bill Cooke, our Conservation Officer at Prairie River. They later moved to Pelly, Darintosh and Buffalo Narrows. Bill then went with federal Indian Affairs and they were moved to Meadow Lake, Shellbrook, Saskatoon, Nanaimo, B.C. and Vancouver. They live in Burnaby and have four children.
In 1960 we moved the old house off the lot and built a new one in its place. Had a cistern in the basement for water supply, so had our first real bathroom and running water. This was a big help for Emily; when we were first married she did the washing on the old scrub board.
The country was rapidly drying up as the bush disappeared and in 1963 we bought the Percy Wright land, the NE 33-44-7 and the S1/2 4-45-7 and in 1964 purchased our lease from the Department. Marsh and Jones had bought the Collins farm, a half section which bordered the town to the west. We cleared a lot of it up and seeded it to grass and later stocked it with black Angus cows.
In 1965 Garnet married Judy Gibson of Porcupine Plain and he started with Federal Fisheries, first moving to Hay River, N.W.T., then Port Hardy, B.C., Sandspit on the Queen Charlotte Islands, Whitehorse Yukon, and Vancouver. They live in Port Coquitlam and have two boys.
Grid roads were being built and graveled as was No. 3 highway which went on to Hudson Bay. With the bush all off, the snow would melt in the spring and water run off so the Red Deer River would fill up and later in the summer it would dry up some years. During all the years we farmed at Prairie River, Joe Ferleyko worked for us and was a real help in keeping things in shape and getting the farming done.
Emily had a heart condition which had got worse and in 1966 Dr. Amundson sent her to Rochester, Minn, and she had surgery early in 1967. The summer of 1967 was bad for Emily; she was in and out of hospitals and in November Dr. Harlick sent her back to Rochester for surgery again.
That was when we decided to sell out and 1967 was our last crop which was real good, the wheat going No. 1 northern. The spring of 1968 we sold out and moved to Winfield, B.C. and Emily had a few pretty good years before passing away on January 21, 1977. I still live in Winfield.

Hilda Olga TOMS (b.1890 Jun 11 Berasna, Wolinski Province, Russia)Shtetlinks: Volhynia (Other Names: Volinskaya, Volin, Wolyn, Wolina, Wolinsk, Volinski,Wolinski, Volenskii, Wolenskj, Wolenskja, Volin, Volyn:) Volhynia was a Gubernia, or province, of the Russian Empire from the 18th century until 1919, when the western part of Volhynia became part of Poland. In 1945 the entire area of the Volhynia Gubernia was again ruled by the Soviet Union, but the gubernia system was no longer used and the Volhynia name was used to identify a smaller region, called an Oblast, in the western part of the old gubernia. Most of what was the Volhynia Gubernia is now in the Ukraine, with a small part of northern Volhynia in Belarus. Major cities and towns in Volhynia include Zhitomir (the former capital), Rovno, Lutsk, Kovel, Berdichev, and Novograd-Volinsk.
