In 1945 the entire area of the Volhynia Gubernia was again ruled by the Soviet Union, but the gubernia system was no longer used and the Volhynia name was used to identify a smaller region, called an Oblast, in the western part of the old gubernia. Most of what was the Volhynia Gubernia is now in the Ukraine, with a small part of northern Volhynia in Belarus. Major cities and towns in Volhynia include Zhitomir (the former capital), Rovno, Lutsk, Kovel, Berdichev, and Novograd-Volinsk.

4 Drown In Red River
Car Crashes Truck On Letellier FerryFour persons were drowned and two others narrowly escaped death Sunday evening when two vehicles plunged off the end of the St. Pie ferry into the Red river between Letellier and Dominion City, Man. Dead are: Mrs. Ann Jones, 37, of Dominion City, Man., her two children Lynn, 9, and her eight-month-old daughter, Maxine; Gustav Marsh, 63, of Rosenfeld, Man. John Jones, 37, husband of the drowned woman and Mrs. Marsh, 56, wife of Gustav Marsh escaped from their vehicles after being submerged in the water.
According to R.C.M.P. officers who arrived at the scene from Emerson, the Jones family were sitting on the ferry in their light panel truck when the car driven by Marsh came down the hill towards the ferry on the east side of the river. The car proceeded slowly into position on the ferry behind the truck, then seemed to speed up, plowing into the truck and knocking it through the 7/16 guard chain. Abby Raw, the ferryman, said the car speeded up even more and plunged off the ferry, landing on top of the truck. It then rolled over on its side and settled on the bottom.
BOTH GO UNDER
Both vehicles were completely submerged in 15 feet of water. Jones, whose foot had been wedged in the door to keep it open while the truck was on the ferry, was able to escape when the truck plunged into the river. He clung to the left rear wheel, until he was rescued by Mr. Raw, who had quickly launched a small boat that was tied to the ferry.
Mrs. Marsh, who has not swum since she was 16 came to the surface and managed to swim to the ferry cable a few feet away. She pulled herself along the cable about 70 feet to shore.
While busy getting Jones into the boat, Raw noticed Mr. Marsh float to the surface about 20 feet from the point the car entered. "He appeared to be limp, and just going with the current," the ferryman said, "and a few seconds later he sank out of sight."
Several attempts were made to free the occupants of the truck. Jones dove twice from the boat, but was unable to reach the door of the vehicle. He had to be restrained by Raw, who said he thought Jones would drown himself. Len Anderson of Dominion City, driver of one of the other two cars on the ferry, tore off his shirt and coat and plunged into the swirling water in an attempt to save some of the Jones' family.
Mrs. Marsh was taken away immediately by friends but Jones stayed until two hastily summoned tractors from nearby farms pulled the car and the truck from the river. The bodies of the Jones family were found still in the cab of the truck. Mrs. Jones was holding the baby tightly clutched in her arms.
INQUEST PLANNED
The bodies were taken to Dominion City, where Dr. J. Dick, coroner, stated an inquest would be held.
The body of Mr. Marsh had not been recovered by Monday noon. Dragging operations under the direction of Sgt. Archie Batchelor and Constables Bob Steele and Tom Beal from the Emerson R.C.M.P. detachment were still continuing.
Mr. Jones when interviewed Monday said that it was a last minute decision on the part of his wife to cross over the river. Mrs. Jones asker her husband to drive over to visit her niece Mrs. Norris Muquin, at Lettelier. "My son, Lyn, almost missed the trip." Mr. Jones said, "but he returned from his grandmother's just as we were leaving." There were only the two children in the Jones' family.
Mrs. Marsh, who was seated beside her husband in the car said that they approached the ferry very slowly, and just moved onto the back ramp when "Gustav seemed to lose control and we speeded up hitting the truck in the rear." "I jumped out, I can swim a little and I guess that's what saved my life," she said.
Ferry service resumed about 11.30 p.m. The two vehicles which crashed into the water were the third and fourth to do so in the past nine years. The ferry has been operating for 12 years. It is owned by the municipality of Franklin. These were the first fatalities, Mr. Raw said.
Mr. Marsh has been a resident of Rosenfeld for the past three years and was employed as a section man with the C.P.R. Mr. Jones was a caterpillar operator for the municipality of Franklin.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Jones and the two children are not complete.
