JOHN JONES

I was born at Birtle, Manitoba August 14, 1922 the eldest son of Frank and Nellie Jones. At the age of three months I moved with the family to Dominion City, Manitoba. It was here that I spent my childhood days and received my education.

In those days you did anything and everything trying to make a dollar. I was about fifteen when I drove the Anglican minister, Rev. Green, every Sunday. This trip was a total of forty miles but I made three dollars a trip and that was a lot of money at that time.

Then I drove the mail route. I made this trip three times a week for forty-five dollars a month.

In January 1948 I came to Carnduff to work on the farm for Donald McKillop. It was while I was working for Donald I met my wife, Dorothy (Duffy). Dorothy was born at Alida, October 22, 1929, the fourth daughter of James and Esther Munro. In the fall of 1947 Munros moved to the Carnduff district. Dorothy stayed at home helping on the farm and also working for several people in the area.

We were married in Winnipeg on July 6, 1950. We went to Dominion City and worked for my grandfather, Harry Hancox on his dairy farm. From there we moved to Morris, Manitoba where we owned and operated the dray. It was here our eldest child, Marlene was born in January 1955.

The sound of big money in the oil fields of Saskatchewan lured us back here. So in 1956 I started work in the oil field at Carnduff. I worked service rigs for some time and then started driving truck for V. R. Partridge hauling water to drilling rigs.

In August 1957 Donna, our second daughter was born. Dorothy and the girls spent a lot of time at the rigs staying in a trailer on the leases. I left the rigs for a time and moved to Oxbow in 1960, to work for J. A. Workman and Sons hauling gravel. I worked there for two summers. This being seasonal work, I took a job driving a crude oil truck for Bowman and Spearing.

At this time we had our trailer parked in Len Yeates' yard. Jamie, our first son was born in September 1962. By now, with our three children we had to move to a larger home. In the spring of 1963 we moved our new trailer to Nelson Joyce's trailer court.

In 1964 I purchased my own truck and started hauling water for Commonwealth Drilling. Then in 1967 we moved back to Carnduff and I continued hauling for the rigs until most of them returned to Alberta. (I am still looking for that big oil money).

In October 1969, John Jr. (Jay) arrived on the same day as Dorothy's birthday.

It was the fall of 1972 when we sold our trailer and moved to the Partridge farm to work for Bob and it is here that we are presently residing.

I have a great love of horses and enjoy working with them. I use my team of Percherons for chores around the farm. We give lots of sleigh rides and usually go caroling at Christmas time. I have my own show wagon, built by my son-in-law Wilfred Langlois. Dorothy also drives the horses and does the braiding of the manes and tails and other decorations on the horses, getting them ready for show.

Dorothy is employed at the meat market in Carnduff and has been so for eight years now.

MARLENE married Art Culbertson in October 1973. They are residing in Estevan and have two daughters, Susan and Sarah. Art, who is a mechanic, looks after any necessary repairs on our vehicles.

DONNA married Wilf Langlois in July 1975 and with one daughter, Anita, is presently living in Regina.

JAMIE is living at home and at present is employed by Bill Boyce.

JAY is at home and is still in school.
