----------------------------------------------------------
From "The House That WERE Built" by Eric Were, Adelaide Australia:James was the fourth son of George and Mary Were and was born at 9 Cambridge Street, Golden Square, London on 11th June 1854. He lived at this address until he was four years old, when the family moved to Lower Curham in Devon. James grew up in a rural environment and learned farming skills.
In 1872, three years after his father's second marriage, the 18 year old James decided to emigrate to New Zealand - possibly influenced by the Kelland family of Devon who had previously emigrated to the land of the kiwi. It was a momentous occasion, for James was leaving behind the girl that he loved, Eva Sidwell Abbott - but promised to return and marry her. He travelled on the "Hydaspes" which arrived at Dunedin, Otago, on 20th September 1872.
James who went to New Zealand as an assisted emigrant, was listed as a ploughman and no doubt spent the first few years working on farms inthe South Canterbury region. During this period his brother Robert arrived in New Zealand - of whom, more later.
After 5 or 6 years of separation James returned to Devon to claim his bride and they were married in Halberton on 18th September 1878. Within a month of their marriage, Jim and Sidwell (as they were usually known) embarked for New Zealand, accompanied by her half-brother, Alfred Hedley Abbott, and Jim's two brothers - Charles and William Henry.
This party of five young adventurers sailed from Plymouth aboard the"Piako" on 11th October 1878, little dreaming of the danger and drama of the voyage that lay ahead. One month after sailing, and 200 miles offthe Brazilian coast, the "Piako" caught fire. It was the morning of 11th November when the fire bells rang and at first it seemed that all was lost. But fortunately another ship came on the scene, and despair changed to hope as all passengers were transferred to the "Loch Doon" (a trading vessel travelling from San Francisco to Cork).
The "Piako" was not given up, but limped to Coconut Island near Pernambuco, followed by the "Loch Doon". The stricken ship was skuttled, but raised again and refitted. During this time of waiting, the passengers were cared for by the authorities, and some of the would be colonists decided to return to England. But nothing daunted, James Were and his party boarded the refitted "Piako" and continued the delayed voyage, reaching Lyttelton (Christchurch) on 5th March 1879.
Jim and Sidwell began family life near Timaru where he had a dairy farm and milk run at a place called Washdyke. With a family of two boys they then moved Horarata, west of Christchurch, where baby Mary was born. By 1884, always seeking to improve his postion, Jim took his family to settle Midhurst, Taranaki, in the North Island. This was an area called the 'Dairyman's Paradise', and it was here that the rest oftheir children were born and grew up.
The Were family later moved to Stratford where James was one of the first seven directors of the Stratford Farmers Co-Op., and chairman of the Association. Farther south at Hawera, Jim farmed properties, owned an Opera House, and stables at Eltham. He was a keen speculator.
The years passed and Eva Sidwell Were died suddenly on 25th September 1913 and for six years Jim was a widower. At the age of 66 he married in Wellington to Lila Palliser - a descendant of the Kelland family. Jim and Lila lived in the Auckland area for many years until she passed away in 1931. In 1936 he had a trip to England as a farmers' representative, this being his last visit to his homeland. Jim outlived all of his sons except one - he also outlived his three brothers in New Zealand, and passed away on 14th December 1941 at age 88. In his last years he had been cared for by his widowed daughter, Margaret Winks, who today is the sole survivor of her immediate family.
James Were leaves behind a memory of a hard working and successful farmer and business man who raised a fine family and settled them on good land. He had made a significant contribution to the land of his adoption during its pioneering days.
----------------------------------------------------------
In the "Return of Freeholders of New Zealand" of 1882:James WERE, labourer of Christchurch is listed as the owner of two pieces of land- 12 acres valued at 50 pounds and in the Selwyn County an unspecified acreage, valued at 180 pounds, in the Geraldine County.
