From "The House That WERE Built", by Eric Were, Adelaide, Australia

George Victor was a grandson of the original George Were of Halberton, and a son of Thomas Were who settled in Exeter, Devon. Young George's four uncles, as already studied, were well settled in New Zealand when he emigrated to those fair shores in 1906. His "kiwi" cousins called him "new chum George". He went to live with the Abbott family connections at Rangitaka, South Canterbury, but later moved to Taranaki.

On 26th March 1913, George married Vera Sarah Johns in the Anglican Church at Moturoa, New Plymouth. In this rich dairying district he was a buttermaker. George and Vera had a family of three sons and one daughter and later lived at Tauranga.

In 1934 George Victor went to England on a 5-year posting as a representative of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture. (He was accompanied by his family, except his eldest son James Charles.) World War II caused an extension of George's stay in England and the children settled there. The youngest son, George Alexander, lives in London. James Charles Were who remained in New Zealand, operates a successful Real Estate Agency in Auckland and keeps the Were flag flying in that prosperous city.
