Alternative Versions: Gormenghast and Forever Knight
by G.M. Baxter
Information
- Mervyn Peake (1911-68) was an illustrator, poet and novelist. He is
best known for the novels concerning the fictional, alternate-reality
city-state of Gormenghast: Titus Groan, Gormenghast and Titus
Alone; in 1999 the BBC filmed a four-part series based on the first
two books. For more information about the characters you may read my review
of the series or my synopsis
on the Internet Movie Database; for more information about Mervyn Peake's
life and work, visit Gormenghast
Castle and the official Mervyn
Peake site. If you've just seen the series, do yourself a favour and
read the books; at least look up Peake's illustrations of the characters,
which are amazing.
- Forever Knight (1992-96) was a TV series set and filmed in Toronto,
treating the adventures of an 800-year-old vampire making amends by
fighting crime with the city police force. This short-lived series must
rival Star Trek in terms of the amount and variety of fan fiction it
inspired; for a series description, visit my Dracula page,
for everything else (including lots more fiction), visit Amy Rambow's wonderful site.
