This site is presented in an effort to share Goldsack and related genealogy with others who are interested in tracing their family history.  Many thanks to all those who contributed their time and effort in compiling this information.  

This is a work in progress. This page and the other pages, are always being updated and reviewed in an effort to present an accurate picture of our past.  The records presented on this site have been verified to the best of my ability, however, mistakes do happen.  If you came across an error or an omission please inform me. The highlighted areas are places where I am not certain about accuracy and am presently working at double checking information – that is not to say that the areas which are not highlighted are completely accurate.

 UPDATE: November 1, 2002:

New information has been presented that has the potential to clear up many of the questions that have been nagging at me for several years.  First, if you can trace your line back to Peter and Sara from Nonington this is important.  For years Sara was considered to be Esther (or Sarah) Redwood, however a marriage at Saltwood on 16 January 1699 provides evidence that Peter married Sarah Arthur. Sarah’s roots can be traced to the Nonington area during that time.  More importantly, Peter’s parentage has been established.  He was the son of Petter Colsonsacke (Goldsack) and Jane Pepper – baptised at Dover, St. James on 6 October 1679 as Petter Gouldsacke.  This means that we can now tie this line to the line of Peter and Jane and beyond.  Second, it is likely that Esther (or Hestor) Redwood married Petter Colsonsacke in January 1702 after Jane (nee: Pepper) had died in October 1701.

 

Finally, based on the hard work of Daphne Argent and Doug Goldsack, I believe that there is enough evidence to rearrange the trees so that Peter (1703) and Peter (1707) can exchange wives.  My site has been altered to reflect this change.

(1) Robert Colonsacke and Elizabeth Longley were married 9 Feb1589 at Bekesbourne (near Canterbury, Kent)

 

(2)  Robert Colonsacke and Agnes Kitchyn were married on 22 Nov 1616 at St. Clements, Sandwich.

 

The above marriages are no doubt connected to the Dover Goldsack Family, but, as yet there is no way to conclusively connect them.  A Richard Colsonsacke is a mentioned, as well as Peter Colsonsacke in 1583:

 

However,  a will has been found for (3)George Colsonsacke who died in 1669.  In the Will he names his wife,  Ursula.  The Exemption certificates for the Hearth Tax in 1674 for Dover make reference to the following members of a family:

 “ Parish of St. Mary’s, St. Nicholas Ward, George Goldsack one hearth, Widow Colsensack two hearths.

Parish of St. James, Peter Colsonsacke two hearths.”

Two of the daughters were baptised in Dover. Although Peter and George can not be definitively connected to George and Ursula it seems likely that that this is how the family was comprised:

(4) Peter Colsonsacke/Gouldsack/ Goldsack (1643-Oct 1731) married Jane Pepper (1647- bur. 19 Oct 1701) at St. James, Dover on 6 June 1666.

During his lifetime Peter used the name Colsonsacke, Gouldsacke and Goldsack, all names appear in the St. James registry. His last four children (beginning in1683) were all registered as Goldsack.  Peter and Jane were married for 35 years prior to her death. She was buried at St. James on 19 October 1701 as Jane Gouldsacke.  Peter married for the second time to Hester (or Esther) Redwood at Dover on 25 Jan 1702.  (There was a Hester Redwood listed in the registry who had a child out of wedlock in 1683 (Elizabeth 1683).

(5) John Goldsack (24 May 1681 – 1711) was born in Dover – St. James parish. He married Joanna Vile (b.26 Dec 1679) at Dover on 28 July 1703.   Joanna was the daughter of Edward Vile (1646-27 Sep 1733, Dover) and Thomasin Dove (d. 13 Mar 1726, Dover) they were married 24 July 1677 at Dover. These were their children (all births and deaths at Dover, St. James):

(6) Peter Goldsack (1707- bur. 4 Dec 1781, St. Margaret’s) was baptised at Dover,St. James Parish on 15 June 1707.  He married Anne Chandler (1711- bur.12 Jan 1786, St. Margaret’s) at Buckland on (9 April 1738).  Ann was the granddaughter of George and Ann Chandler (d. 5 Apr 1704) from St. Margaret’s. They had the following children:

May was living at 59 High Street, Dover with their two children at the time of Edward’s death.

In 1851 he was a General Labourer living at 13 West Street, Deal.  In 1866 George and 6 others were charged with concealing in the boat ’Dart’ a quantity of copper sheeting, leaden pipe and a coil of rope salvaged from the wreck of a boat on the Goodwin sands. Charges were dismissed because the men had previously saved 6 men from the vessel when it wrecked (from Deal paper, 18 Jan 1866).  In 1871 George was a Boatman. In 1881 Mary Ann was a Needlewoman living with her 7 children at 2, George Alley, Deal.

(Q4 1863, Deal-1906, Eastry)  On 4 Aug 1877 William and George Cannon were charged with annoying passengers at the Railway Station. Reprimanded. On 2 Sept 1882 George won 2/6d for coming 4th in a boat race at Deal Regatta. On 6 Oct 1883 William and William Smith, both Fish Hawkers, were charged with stealing two waterproof coats from the boa of the schooner ‘K.J. Allpor C’. Both found guilty and sentenced to 21 days hard labour. In 1901 William may have been working for the Royal Engineers.

(7) Henry Goldsack (bp. 16 Nov. 1755,St. Margaret’s  – bur. 10 Oct 1828, St. Margaret’s) was born in St. Margaret’s and was the youngest child of Peter and Ann.  On November 18, 1780 he married Ann Young (1761-buried 29 Dec 1831, St. Margaret’s) at St. Margaret’s. Witnesses were William Rolfe and Henry Bowls. They lived all their lives there and are buried in the parish churchyard. *Ann was the daughter of Susannah Goldsack and Thomas Young. In 1859 the license for his Red Lion Pub was held by his niece, Mrs. Matilda Knott.  I have a copy of John’s Will dated 1 Feb 1858. John was a “Victualler” living in the Long Room at Rutley & Co. Brewers. By his account the room and its contents were his property and Rutley & Co. were given first chance to buy it after his death.

In 1837 George negotiated the sale of his father’s property in St. Margaret’s to his uncle, Isaac Goldsack (130 Pounds).  In 1841 they were at King Street, Ramsgate and George was working as a Mariner. In 1851 he was a Victualler at the Prince Coburg Inn, 37 King Street, Ramsgate.  From 1851-1855 Mrs. Phoebe Read held the license for the Prince Coburg. Perhaps Mrs. Read was George’s mother-in-law. In 1865 George was still at the Prince Coburg. In 1875 his Will was proved at Canterbury by Edward Miles, Yeoman, Ramsgate and James Coveney of H.M. Customs, London (under 300 Pounds).  In 1881 Jane was a Licensed Victualler (Prince Coburg) living at 72 King Street with her two sisters (Elizabeth (72) and Hannah (64), four children and two servants . On 4 May 1896 the Will of Jane Goldsack, 84 Hardnes Street, Ramsgate was proved in London by John Charles Goldsack, Auctioneer and James Goldsack, Licensed Victualler (935 Pounds).

                                    (10) Amelia (1837, Ramsgate-29 May 1883) Unmarried. In 1851 Amelia was living at the Prince Coburg Inn, Ramsgate. She living with Step-mother, Jane in 1881 at 72 King Street.  She was an Assistant Licensed Victualler. Her Will was proved by her only next of kin Frederick William on 10 Aug 1883 (about 100 Pounds).

He was the trustee for the will of John Robert Clark (Tobacconist & Confectioner) In 1915 he was still an Auctioneer.On 21 June 1927 John was granted administration of the estate of Lily. He was living at 27 Grove Road. John was in partnership (Auctioneers,Valuers,House and Estate Agents, Surveyors, Accountants, Auditors, Public House Brokers ,and Secretaries of Public Companies) and the company was called Messrs. SCARLETT & GOLDSACK. The business was still operating on  29 Feb 1940 when at which time Henry Hadlow Stockley retired from the firm. John Walter Scarlett and Clement Stanley Scarlett continued on from that date under the same name.

He is buried at PORTSMOUTH (KINGSTON) CEMETERY Hampshire. Lily was living at32 Landport treet, Landport, Portsmouth at the time of Albert’s death.

John was working as an Agricultural Labourer. In 1871 Mary was a widow at Crow Hill House. She was employed as a Charwoman. In 1881 Mary was at Buckand in the home of William Fisher working as a Nurse. In 1881 Mary’s widowed mother, Elizabeth was still living at Solton Cottage. She was working as a Charwoman.

She moved to Scotland and married David Orr. He served with the Argyle and Sutheiland Highlanders. She had 3 daughters with her second husband (Davinia, Eliza, ?) According to MJ Eliza was a deaf, blind, mute for 91 years.

In 1871 he was at Etantree Farm, Eythorne.  In 1881 at Waldershare Farm  working as an Indoor Farm Servant. Emma is also a Farm Servant. There were 5 boarders living with them. In 1891 they were living on the grounds of  The Mansion, Eythorne, John was a Farm Baliff. 5 boarders. The Mansion was home to the Earl of Guilford.  In 1901 they are at Coldred. John is a Farmer. At the time of his death he was at Church Hill, Shepherdswell.

In 1881 Emma and George were living at Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland at 30 Albert Street as man and wife.

Witnesses were James Ash and Elizabeth Goldsack.* Sarah’s great niece, Sarah Ann Cousens married my great grandfather, John Goldsack in 1878.   In 1881 Sarah is a widow working as a Laundress at St. Margaret’s. Her granddaughters, Sarah and Ellen were living with her at St. Margaret’s in 1881.  In 1891 she was at St. Margaret’s working as a Laundress. In 1901 Sarah is living on her own means at St. Margaret’s at Cliffe.

In 1881 they were at St. Margaret’s. William was a Shepherd and Susanna was a Schoolmistress at National School. In 1891 William was a Labourer and Susanna was still a teacher. In 1901 they are at St. Margaret’s, William is an Agricultural Labourer. Susanna was living at 61 Snargate Street, Dover when she died.

 

                        (10) Peter (25 April 1841, St. Margaret’s-bur. 21 Oct 1893 St. Margaret’s) m.(8 Oct 1863, St. Margarets) Elizabeth Ann Jell (1843, Hougham- bur. 5 May 1919, St. Margaret’s) Elizabeth was the daughter of John Rogers Jell and Ann Dilnot. Witnesses were Elizabeth Tucker and Richard Sutton. Peter was living with his parents at Dover in 1841 and in 1851 at St. Margaret’s.  In 1861 Peter was working as an Agricultural Labourer at St. Margaret’s. In 1871 Peter and Elizabeth were living in Sutton Cottage, Westcliffe. In 1881 he was a Shepherd at St. Margaret’s and then in 1891 they were back at Westcliffe, Peter working as an Agricultural Labourer. Peter died at Westcliffe. Elizabeth Ann died at 5 Wellesley Terrace, St. Margaret’s.

In 1885 John was a Carrier. Witnesses at the marriage were Peter and Ellen Goldsack.  In 1901 they were at East Langdon. John was a Publican.

In 1901 Lottie was a Bag Sorter at the Paper Plant in Dover.

Witnesses at their marriage were William and Henry Goldsack.

(Edward died at 2 Wellesley Terrace in 1925)  In 1913 James was Gardener. In that same year his brother, John Wyborn Goodban (1892) died at home (2 Wellesley Trerrace). Witnesses to the marriage were Charlotte Goldsack and Edward Goodban.

Henry was the son of George Matcham, Labourer. In 1914 Henry was an Air Mechanic for the Royal Navy. Winesses were William Goldsack and Emily Goodban.

In 1861 he was a Servant/Carter at Westcliffe Farm. In 1871 he was a Drayman, unmarried, living in the house of Charles Palmer on Belmont Place, Walmer. In 1881 Henry was a Brewer’s Labourer, living at 5 Belmont Place, Walmer. He had married the widow of Charles Palmer. Also living in the house were Charlotte’s three children – Albert E Palmer (aged 18), Frances E. Palmer (aged 16) and Ellen J. Palmer (aged 13).
