About Us

The Global Forum organizers share a strong concern about climate change, and want to inform and empower our community to take action. We are primarily but not exclusively members of the Vancouver Point Grey NDP Outreach Committee, and we are fossil fuel free - powered entirely by volunteer effort!

In November 2006, expecting an early 2007 federal election, we decided to raise the profile of climate change as an election issue. It is hard to believe now that only a year ago, climate change was not the prominent issue it now is. We organized We Need Some Bright Ideas. NOW!, a panel discussion on climate change followed by a screening of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. Filling the Ridge Theatre to capacity with concerned citizens from Point Grey and Kitsilano, and from as far away as Sechelt, Mission, and White Rock was brilliant** - truly, the threats of climate change had clearly struck a chord. We surveyed people who attended the panel discussion and found that most wanted to find out ways to individually affect positive change.

From that survey, we gathered that many people were interested in climate change and food. The questions posed were endless. How can we reduce greenhouse gases around food production?  What can we eat during the winter months?  Why can't we find BC apples in the grocery stores? We set out to answer these queries and many others like them during our next event: Eating Locally, Thinking Globally: How to Save the Planet with Your Food Choices food forum. With this event we attracted well over 100 people and gave participants a wonderful opportunity to share their incites on reducing their environmental impact on food systems.

Now we're looking forward to our next great event, Walk, Bike, Bus, Drive: The Transportation Debate - featuring the UBC debate team! If you're interested in transportation and sustainability (come on... who isn't ??), come and join us for this next exciting function.

The organizers are interested in your views and in feedback regarding our events. Please feel free to contact us with your feedback at GWForum@Telus.Net.
