John b: Feb 20, 1697 at Coltclose Wood baptised Feb 20, 1697 m: Isabel Wallas, Feb, 1747 at Ousby c: William, Jane, Margaret, Thomas, Mary, Isabel |
John lived at Flosh, Kirkland until about
1752 then returned to Hasket Parish. John was at Ousby. living in Kirkland, some 16 miles from Heskett to escape some troubled times. "Bonnie" Prince Charlei was stirring up some Scots and attacking the northern border of England. He captures Carlisle in 1745, left a garrison there, and started south through Haskett, to claim his throne. The Duke (the Butcher) of Cumberland, son of George II passed through Haskett going the other way and retook Carlisle the following year. The Duke stayed in the area for a while using it as a gathering area for his army. Where John lived in Heskett was too close to the action and the marauding troops, being only about 4 miles from Carlisle, 5 at the most. To avoid being killed, inducted into the army, or having his arts, horses or oxen or other equipment and belongings stolen or requisitioned, John got out of the way. Kirkland had the advantage too of being off the beaten track, unlike Haskett that was right on it. As a stonemason, a free man, and his own boss, it was easy for him to move about - -Smart man, Where would we be now if he hadn't? The churches at Kirkland and Heskett are very old, going back to early Norman times. John appears to be the founder of Mellguards. At least
it was he who gave it the present name. Hindson's lived at Mellguards
perhaps as early as 1750 but then they used the place name Pettergill
