James, no doubt helped his father and older brother build St. Mary's of Wreay before coming to Canada with George. He lived first in Grimsby (then called "The Forty"). He was a tailor, working with Bailey in a drygoods shop (see 1851-2 " Smith's Canada, a directory of Business and Professional Men in Canada"). Later he bought a farm in Grantham Twsp. close to George, in District #8, sheet 43. lot or part of lot 1011. Concession or Range #2; 150 acres, 100 under cultivation, 90 under crops in 1860. Cash value of farm was $10,000 (a lot of money in those days).
The1861 Census shows James and family on the farm.  By the 1871 Census they were all gone - probably to St. Catherines, Thorold or someplace near. James was in Welland, on Frasier Street in 1879 where he worked as a clerk.
On Sunday May 10, 1867, Francis Joseph (then 15) and John George (then 19) were confirmed at St. George Church St. Catherines, by Bishop of Niagara.
The 1881 Census shows James (a widower) now a bookeeper living with his daughter Fanny and his son in law Samuel J. Sidey in Welland. Samuel aged 30 is a printer, Fanny 21 and James 61. James probably lived with the Sidey's until his death in 1905 at age 85. It appears that James and his brother George were very close.
