In 1851 Robert and his family were living at Mellguards in a different house from his father. He was 33, a stonemason. Jane is shown as 34, dauhgter Ann as 10; Joseph, 7; Isabella, 2; and John 6 months
According to the 1861 Census, Robert and Jane were living at Roughton Gill near Mellguards. He was 43, employed as a farm labourer. Jane was 45, Ann 20, Isabella 13, John 19, Robert 8 and William 4. Something happened to Robert or the stonemason business with hom now being employed as a farm labourer and no longer living at Mellguards.
