James and family went to the Manitoba
Extension in 1872 and returned sometime later. The 1881 Census shows them
all back in St. Catherines. James was a carpenter and served with the 19th KLincoln Battalion a s aprivate. He served at Clifton, Chippewa, and Fort Erie. He received the General Service Medal for Fenian Raids 1866-70. (perhaps because of this service he and George received a grant of land in the Manitoba Extension, or what is known as Saskatchewan today) Medal registrations C-1862, 1866, RG9, 11A5, Vol6, p 188&185. The St. Catherines Directory shows James, as a carpenter, living on Henry St. West Side, near Louise from 1875-1882. His house on Henry Street was also said to be near Elizabeth. In 1898 he is shown in St. Patrick's Ward on the Provincial Voting List. |
