 John emigrated to Upper Canada (St. Catherines) about 1858, after he was married. He probably stayed with his uncles George or James on arrival.

Elizabeth Johnstone is the daughter of James Johnstone born Feb 25, 1811, and Margaret (Nelson) born Feb 14, 1811 died Mar 16, 1882 at Erie Pennsylvania. James Johnstone left England for Australia in 1840. He never returned.

The 1861 census of St. Catherines shows John at age 27, as a clerk, belonging to the Church of England, living in a one and a half story frame house in St. George's Ward. Elizabeth was 25 and her mother, Margaret Johnstone, aged 45 lived with her. The 1871 census shows John as a bookkeeper, and Margaret is no longer show as living with John and Margaret. They moved to Erie probably in 1872.
