“To
achieve success in the non-profit sector, the organization must be managed
like a “for profit” or a “going concern” business. The work that is
done must be professional.”

Susans’ non-profit career began with Scouts
Canada in 1988. Along with the Direction of the Executive Director, staff
and volunteers, Susan was directly responsible for the innovative and
progressive success of the Annual Popcorn Campaign Incentive Program from
1993 - 1998.
"With effective
planning, attention to detail, a positive attitude and infectious
enthusiasm, Susan ensured our Councils' fundraising activities generated a
significant return to Scouting so it could carry out its' community
programs." Doug Campbell, Past Divisional Executive Director, Past
West Council Executive Director
for B.C., Alberta, The Yukon and N.W.T.
The Annual Popcorn Campaign reached a
million dollars in retail sales in Calgary alone, and today it is a well
known and popular national program. Using Susan’s logical ideas and
marketing enthusiasm, historical operational funds were generated for the
Calgary Region. Later, Susan was sought after for helpful ideas and support
for other regions across Canada and the United States.
Susan left Scouts Canada to start her own
consulting practice in 1998. Although sad to leave, she left the
organization in good hands that included proven marketing ideas, a strong
dedicated committee and exceptional support staff. The unique concepts,
enthusiastic attitude and a workable structure was left for both the Scout
Shop and the Fundraising Programs.
Susan understands that fund development
includes cross-referencing organizational opportunities. Strong and unique
ideas are required to be different than every other campaign.
"While co-ordinating
fundraising efforts at Scouts Canada, Susan met many Calgary business people
from a variety of industries. Susan recognized the potential of the
fledgling Annual Popcorn Sale. She believed that a crew of volunteer
entrepreneurs could grow the annual Scouts Popcorn drive and she spearheaded
the effort to do so. Susan operates under the adage that volunteers "arrive
motivated" and stay that way when they are appreciated. She knows that one
gets the best out of everyone simply by treating each individual as the most
valuable member of the team. As a result there are no volunteer fatigue
issues when Susan is at the helm." Ted Cutlan, Manager, Business
Development Red Flame Hot Tap Services Ltd.
"For several months, we
have used the services of a fund development consultant by the name of Susan
Pendray. She definitely specializes in the nonprofit sector. In addition to
providing consulting services, I should also mention that she teaches
fundraising courses. As for our experience with Susan, we would highly
recommend her. She not
only has vast and lengthy experience in the industry, she is a pleasure to
work with. I might also mention that she really understands "Boards" and
works well with them, anticipating their expectations, questions and
objections. Her interpersonal skills are exceptional and her integrity above
reproach." Gary Kauk, Director of Operations, Servants Anonymous
Society of Calgary.
