Adopted schools

7 schools in BC and 2 in Labrador have been adopted by chapters. These schools are provided magazine subscriptions, toys, warm clothing, CD's, books, computer, printers, and software only touches the surface of the care shown by participating chapters.

	In Boston Bar, IODE shared in the cost of new playground at the school.
	Hired a musician for five sessions to teach children about world rhythms and percussion instruments and financed a "Kid-Safe" program at an inner-city school.

Assistance to local schools

"Teen Depression Manuals" have been distributed to schools and youth centres. Support for Leadership courses, "Dry Grad"; day-care for high school parents and camping trips are just a few of the ways Chapters support their local schools. One chapter supported a wilderness program that helps build self confidence in struggling students through outdoor experience.

Provincial IODE Arts Award

Recognizes youth outside the Lower Mainland excelling in the Arts. This is an annual Award. For more information contact Provincial Office

 

Other Education Work

Born to Read

(an IODE favourite) Parents are encouraged to read to their young children. They receive bags with books to read to their children through public health nurses, family centres, or teen parent day cares.

Libraries

Donates Books to Libraries. Each year the IODE Violet Downey Book award is presented to an outstanding Canadian author of children's and youth's books. The chapters are proud to be able to purchase these books for the libraries in their area or for their adopted school. Also provided funds to build new shelves.

At the 1999 BC Provincial Annual Meeting IODE presented $1,000.00 to UNBC, for the endowed IODE Library fund at UNBC.
