Movie Information

Here is an excellent plot summary written by James Ellis: |
| "Angel, a member of a punk rock band in the apocalyptic future, is kidnapped by Mok, a legendary super rocker. Obsessed with a dark experiment, Mok plans to use Angel's voice to summon a demon from another dimension. The rest of the band follows Mok to Nuke York in an attempt to get her back." |
For the complete cast and crew, as well as many other facts I could just shamelessly rip off from their site... (but am too lazy to do) refer to the Internet Movie Database page for Rock & Rule.
Really great stuff: I have found a set of interviews with the major people involved with the making of Rock & Rule, and a lot of information! They first appeared in fps magazine in 1996 and 1997 (available for purchase online, at their site). The site is called The Critical Eye and has a review and three interviews.

Most Frequently Asked Questions:
Are there two versions of this movie? I remember seeing one that has a different voice for Omar.
Yes indeed, there are two versions of Rock and Rule. One was shown in Canada on CBC in the eighties, the other was more widely released and has recently been shown on BRAVO. I have both copied off television, but my copy of the CBC version is really old and of terrible quality (complete with lame commercials), but is the version I prefer, because Omar does have a better voice, one that is more cocky than the rather weak voice in the other version. I believe there may be some slight dialogue changes but I haven't really checked. Whichever version you've seen, they're both great!
Is there a soundtrack to this movie, and where can I find it?
As far as I am aware there is no official Rock & Rule soundtrack available. However I do know that the recent Cheap Trick box set has the three songs they did in the show. Apparently Lou Reed has an album of songs he did for movies that has his two songs from the show, but I don't know where this CD is available. As for Debbie Harry... a fan of R&R told me that there is a version of her song on vinyl somewhere, but I have yet to confirm that. And it is only solo, not the duet that they do at the end of the movie. Unfortunately, I have no information on Earth, Wind and Fire... sorry.
I have many of the songs in MP3 format in the Music section! Go there now! Right now! : D
Any idea where I can get a copy of this movie?
CinemaZone.com listed a VHS copy for $10.32 US, but cannot get it from MGM since it is no longer in production (See this email message from CinemaZone).
Also, some people sell copies of R&R on ebay.com and other online auction sites. These range from the original release to lower quality bootlegs and usually cost $15 to $30 US depending on how many people bid. Just check around some sites (try searching for Rock Rule) and as usual, buyer beware.
In Canada, it used to be on Bravo once in a while, but they no longer have the rights to show it and apparently never will. If anyone has information on where else to see this movie on TV, please let me know.
Nelvana use to offer to get a technician to make a VHS copy for $79.00, but they have since stopped doing this in anticipation of the DVD release (see below).
UPDATE: Thanks to Averyl T. for letting me know that the National Archives of Canada located in Ottawa, has a copy of the original Canadian version of Rock and Rule. It is available for viewing. Unfortunately copies can only be made of it with the permission of the holder of the copyright. Click to view the archive details.
Is this movie ever going to be re-released?
Many fans ask this question, and we are all eagerly awaiting such an event... Please read this email response to a fellow fan from Clive Smith, Sen Exec V.P. and director of Rock & Rule. Thanks a lot Treva! Maybe more letters to Clive would help show our support? Anyways, it looks like we might see a re-release sometime...
My sources say that Nelvana is "finalizing arrangements with another company at this time" to release Rock & Rule on DVD. (News received February 18, 2000.)
Someone also contacted Nelvana's Headquarters in Toronto, and they said they have stopped releasing the VHS version of "Rock & Rule" pending a deal that is being worked out in order to make it available on DVD. (News received August 3, 2000.)
Someone sent me this information:
"I was told that MGM/UA has plans to release [R&R on DVD] in the near future. I am at this time waiting for info from MGM/UA for some kind of answer."
But your guess is as good as mine as to when the 'near future' will be...it's looking hopeful... but I've been getting this information for over 2 years now. I haven't heard back from my source regarding any reply from MGM or United Artists. (News received April 25, 2001)
