Lethbridge House Blows Up

On Saturday morning just before 10:30am a house located on the North-side of Lethbridge exploded.

A 68-year-old man was looking after his 11-year-old grand daughter. She was blown from the house and landed in the yard. Apparently she escaped with only minor cuts and bruises. The elderly man was discovered very soon afterwards by neighbors. He was under a pile of rubble laying on his sofa. The neighbors quickly dug him out and as from what I understand, moments after he was safe - what was left of the bungalow erupted up in flames.

Both he and the girl, though escaping serious injuries, remained in Lethbridge Regional Hospital yesterday.

The explosion is suspected to be caused by a natural gas leak in the basement.

Talk about a bad day.

Calgary 17th Ave a Bust

After my 6:30AM meeting yesterday at the pool, I came home and wondered what I would be doing for the rest of the day. I have no shifts until Saturday so while I was considering my options, a friend of mine called me up and asked if I wanted to go to Calgary. He wanted to buy a new suit. His wife wanted him to buy a fancy new suit for a wedding they are going to this weekend.

After shopping, for a very nice and might I add expensive new suit, we drove down 17th avenue or "the red mile" on our way to lunch. We were there too early to see any celebratory breast flashing, which I guess, is becoming a tradition there. It's like big foot, the Yeti, or Ogopogo - you hear about these sightings, but you never actually see them yourself. Except on the Internet. (NSFW duh)

On top of it all, the Flames lost last night. I heard yesterday morning that Tampa Bay defenceman Dan Boyle's house had a bad fire causing $300,000 worth of damage. It's really too bad, I can't even imagine how devastating it would be if my house caught on fire. I thought that the whole team might be thrown off their game but it didn't look like it affected them at all. They beat the Flames 4-1 last night tieing up the series with one victory each. You've got to hand it to them, it's going to be a fight to the finish.

Better luck next time Flames.

So, Is He Famous or Not?

Reuters has an article about the blogger and supposedly "famous actor" who goes by the moniker Rance. They claim that research indicates Rance is nothing more than a wannabe who used to work at an ad firm in Los Angeles:

Meanwhile, a Defamer reader tried to unmask Rance by researching the term "Captain Hoof," which appears in the Web address. She came to the conclusion that he was a San Francisco man who worked at an ad agency and once ran a Web site with a similar name -- possibly dedicated to an imaginary horse.

The man, who no longer works for the agency, could not be contacted for this story.

While I have no clue who Rance actually is, I do enjoy reading his blog and will continue to do so - even if he's not as famous as he claims to be.

My Canada

Anna-Maria is in Toronto all this week. I'm off to play Risk with some friends but before I go, here is a little message about Canada (from Joey DeVille's Accordion Guy):

Joey, a Filipino-born Canadian, writes a spirited editorial in response to a jackass racist blogger at enterstageright.com who asserts that the Canadians who died in the Boer War, the two World Wars, and the Korean conflict certainly didn't intend for Toronto to be annexed by the "Third World," and says that the non-whites of Canada are less Canadian, with "no knowledge or affection for the old Canada, in either their hearts or minds."

Hey "Enter Stage Right", fuddle-duddle off eh!

Google's Own Messenger

I know you're thinking it. If you're not well you can start now. When is Google going to come out with their own instant message program? They're obviously working on it. Think about it - they started out with creating the world's best search engine, then they bought out my favorite blogging service: Blogger, they own a pretty nifty networking service: Orkut and they've stated they want to infringe upon Microsoft's turf. They clearly need to enter the messenger market in order to really pull the mass market of users from Hotmail to Gmail. I'm aware of Hello the IM that Blogger is pushing for the purpose of photoblogging, though I haven't tried it. But I'm looking for something that can interact with my webmail - a true blue google product. It's only a matter of time until we see "The Google Messenger", and I, for one, cannot wait.

Update: Turns out Google doesn't own Orkut, they are just affiliated. From Orkut's help page:

Why is it called orkut?
Category: General
Updated: 2/9/2004
Answer
orkut.com is a new social networking service named for the Google engineer who developed it, Orkut Buyukkokten. (Orkut is easier to spell and pronounce than Buyukkokten.) This was created as an independent project and is not part of the Google product portfolio.

The War in Iraq - A Soldiers Viewpoint

I received a forwarded email this morning quoting a blog posting of a letter from a soldier in Iraq.

The gist of what this guy says is that while he is grateful for people "supporting the troops" he is disappointed that they don't support the war.

My quick response to that is: the people don't support the war because the reasons used to justify it were lies, it's a waste of money and people, and it's not going to make a long term difference.

Of course he supports the war, he's a gun toting, warmongering soldier who loves kicking ass over there, and he just wishes the American people could understand how fun that is.

Fighting Tickets in Alberta

On the day of my last exam in the spring semester, I raced home from the university so happy to finally be done for summer. I raced home at 105 km per hour according to the photo-radar bastards, exactly 15 km an hour over the posted limit. Now they want me to pay a cool $90 but I'm thinking of asking for a reduction. Gary shares his ticket fighting strategies and unless I'll lose more money from not working that day, I'll probably take his advice.

Canadian Election

The "pre-election" spending spree can now become the "election" spending spree, as Prime Minister Paul Martin visited Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and asked her to dissolve the 37th Parliament. Thus setting off a 36 day federal election campaign, ending with the vote on June 28th. This is the first general election for all three of the main party leaders. Slumping Liberal support in polls and a more regional vote should make this interesting. I'm predicating a minority government with the Liberals being the party with the most seats while the NDP and Alliance being on opposite ends of the spectrum fill in the rest of the seats and make sure that nothing is passed.

Backmasking

I've decided to add a little something to my backmasking page. So for now I'm working on adding Britney Spears - Hit Me Baby One More Time, Queen - Another One Bites the Dust, and The Beatles - I'm So Tired. I might be tempted to add more after these ones are completed and online. This post would be a good place to comment on other songs you'd like to hear backward samples from (of songs that are known for backmasking).

Update May 23rd: The new backmasking additions are up.

Update June 9th: I just added Pink Floyd's "Empty Spaces" to the backmasking page.

Anna-Maria's New Job

Anna got the job at the University that she had applied for. It seems like a pretty great job and she is very excited about it. She will be in charge of the Summer Programs for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. It's similar to something she did working for the college three years ago only this time she is in charge of the whole program. It will be interesting having us both work at the University - I start my New Media Movie Making Camp in July and she started work today.

Andy's Evidence is in

As disappointing as this is, I still don't know whether or not Andy is back. Pictures posted from the Bunny Ranch seem to indicate that Tony Clifton, not Andy Kaufman showed up last night.

Andy Kaufman's new blog claims however that he was there and that he is the real deal. Yahoo news has stated that they believe him, but who can believe anything Yahoo posts - after being fooled by Andrew Carlssin the time-traveler I won't trust them anymore. Not that I believed he was a time-traveler but I at least thought the story about someone claiming to be from the future was true. I never noticed the part about the Weekly World News covering the story.

Anyway Google News about Andy is coming in fast, and though I wanted so badly to be right, it looks like he's really gone.

Dokaka Hums

He hums your favorite tunes. I downloaded Teen Spirit and yeah, Dokaka is pretty good.

As a five-year-old child, Dokaka hummed along with melodies on television, but one day plugged headphones into the TV, discovering that the sounds in his head matched those piping through the headphones. He quickly realized that songs consist of many parts like bass, drums, etc. Within a year, he began to record himself humming.

At 18, Dokaka started drumming in bands, and four years later stumbled upon his childhood recordings, reigniting his interest in humming. He was first heard humming by others when his band's bassist missed practice, so he hummed the bassline. The band's singer found the humming catchy and recommended professional recording. Dokaka financed and produced his own recordings and uploaded them to the internet, dubbing himself with the onomatopoeic name "Dokaka" from his drum-derived humming sounds!

Here Cattle - Cattle - Cattle

Anna-Maria went to Fort Macleod on Saturday for an open call audition for a Heath Ledger movie. They are looking for locals to be extras in this Western Film they are making. She went with some french friends of her's from the French Association.

In her own words, "We got there at 10:15 and there were hundreds of people lined up. Everybody wanted to be in the movie and I can understand why too. What we did, is we waited in line for about 2 hours and 15 minutes, and then we finally got into the gym where they gave us a form to fill out and then they told us to stand in another line so that we could get measured and have our photos taken. So all in all it was mostly waiting and I don't know when they will let us know or even if they will, but it was a good experience. Everybody was so excited to have a movie shot in their own town that every weirdo, beauty queen, grandma, and two-year old kid showed up. It was very fun / cool / sweet. It was kind of crazy actually so many people showed up with their babies / kids. Kids were just running all over the place. Some of them were crying and many looked extremely bored. They justed waited in line for three hours to get their photo taken. I would never do that to my kids."

What does it mean? Is he back? Is he going to show up at 8:00pm tonight at the House of Blues in Los Angeles?

It's a red-hot housing market

I bought a house in Lethbridge two years ago this September. I'm really happy about the market here in Lethbridge, I think I purchased my house at a great time. I don't normally like to copy / paste an entire article, but I'm afraid that the Lethbridge Herald isn't going to keep this story online for long so here it is:

Housing prices rise and sales volumes soar in the Lethbridge region

By DAVE MABELL

Lethbridge Herald

Think you could handle a 35 per cent sales hike this month?

That's what Lethbridge-area real estate personnel generated last month, as home sales in the city and across the region continued well ahead of last year's pace. With 282 sales completed during the month -- up 35 per cent from the 209 changing hands a year earlier -- April sales were nearly $12 million ahead of April 2003.

But Brent Black, president of the Lethbridge Real Estate Board, points out the month followed a trend set in March when the 325 properties sold through MLS listings represented a 58 per cent jump over the same month last year.

January and February were also significantly ahead of the first months of 2003.

"We've got a strong, exciting year going here," he says.

Selling prices are also on the rise, Black points out. In Lethbridge, where 143 homes were sold, the average price rose close to $148,000 last month compared with $138,000 a year ago.

But home sellers in many towns and rural areas reaped an increase as well. And well over half the homes sold -- whether in the city or surrounding area -- were priced in the $100,000 to $160,000 band.

"Every jurisdiction in our area was up in April," says Black, either in unit sales or dollar volume.

One of the biggest jumps came in the county of Willow Creek, where five homes sold at an average $144,000 compared with $115,000 a year ago. In Cardston and surrounding county, six homes sold for an average better than $114,000 last month compared with three homes averaging $87,000 a year earlier.

And in the Crowsnest Pass, 14 homes changed hands for an average $109,000 vs. five homes at $102,500 last year.

Other areas reported higher sales with less of a price hike. In Taber and area, seven homes sold at an average $98,000, up from three at $97,000.

In Warner county, it was five sales averaging $86,500 this year; four at $83,700 a year ago.

In Pincher Creek, meanwhile, sales were up (from three to seven) but values were down and the same was true in Lethbridge county towns and rural areas, where home sales increased to 21 from 16.

On a region-wide basis, the board reports the $120,000-to-$140,000 price group was by far the busiest with 60 sales. Next highest numbers were in the $100,000-to-$120,000 group (43 sales) and the $140,000-to-$160,000 group (42 sales).

Disney's 71% Increase in Profits and Fahrenheit 911 Update

Things are looking up for both Eisner and Moore.

Disney reported a better-than-expected 71% increase in income for the second quarter which must come as an extreme relief for Eisner who has been under pressure to improve performance or risk losing his job.

Meanwhile a Miramax spokesman has stated that Miramax will distribute Michael Moore's new film, though not under the Miramax label.

Update June 29th, 2004: If you are wondering when Fahrenheit 911 is coming to Lethbridge (I am too), try the Cineplex Odeon website. In the meantime, I recommend reading Plastic's commentary on the film. Plastic is one of the few places, I know of - on the net, where you can get quality discussions.

Update June 30, 2004: An anti-Michael Moore website is encouraging people to download Fahrenheit 911 for free. They are offering the same version of the film that you can find at Suprnova.

The Game of World Domination

Last night I played Risk with Amos, Gavin, and a couple of other guys I hardly know. The thing about Risk is that probability is a major aspect of the game (hence the name). I'm not kidding anybody when I say I never really understood how to calculate probabilty, but a few years ago I became terribly curious about the odds of winning a battle in Risk. I created a small program that generated random numbers and then averaged out the wins and losses finding out the best numbers to have when attacking, defending, and whether to defend with one or two dice. Needless to say it was very inefficient.

Anyway the point is that last night is the first time I've played Risk since making the program. I put my strategy into action since learning how substantially more effective it is to put at least two or three pieces on each territory and worry more about defense than offence. When it came to the game last night it's true that I didn't control any continents until the very end, but when I began to attack, I dominated the whole world. For the Risk players out there, rather than make your own program (like I did) here is a better way (not mine) to calculate odds of winning: the Risk Calculator.

One2host Web Hosting

Yesterday I received the following email:

Hello!

I found your e-mail address posted on a website complaining about one2host.com. I am e-mailing everyone who has been defrauded by them, because they need to be put out of business... and I need your help!

Please tell your story! Write it out once and copy and paste it into the forms if you need to. Yes, it does take a little bit of time - but think about it. If we can get them shut down, or if we can file a class action lawsuit against them, won't it be worth it? If these agencies are inundated with e-mails from angry consumers all at once, they will realize what a serious problem one2host is and they will be more likely to act!

Legal Action:
The Internet Fraud Complain Center (U.S. F.B.I.): http://www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp
International Internet Consumer Fraud Complaints: http://www.econsumer.gov

Class Action Lawsuits:
Case Evaluations http://www.bigclassaction.com

All three ask for similar information. This is worth the small investment of your time!

I also urge you to contact your government representatives (i.e. members of Congress or Parliament). They can be surprisingly helpful!

I am sending this as a BCC, because I don't want your mailbox to get jammed with letters. However, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments or further advice! Also, you are welcome to forward this letter to anyone else who has been victimized by one2host.

Together we can take them down, my friends! It's worth a shot. =)

Kristen

While I am still angry at the waste of money that One2host turned out to be, I do wonder whether what they did was illegal or just extremely poor service (something that is not against the law last time I checked). The hosting that I paid for was unreliable and their service department didn't always get back to me, but a class action lawsuit? If what they did was illegal them I'm all for it, otherwise I just hope that I can tell as many people as possible that they are a REALLY poor option for web hosting.

Grass Beware (and 3 foot anthills)

I got a new mower.

Above is a picture of me with the new mower on Friday just after I had set it up. I'm barely over the fact that my mower got stolen last year, but I'm pretty happy to have gotten a new one. This one is even better than last year's model - 6.75 horse power! I haven't mowed with it yet but when I do the grass isn't going to know what hit it.

Michael Moore Announcement Publicity Stunt?

Michael Moore refutes recent news articles about trying to create a publicity stunt with his new anti-Bush movie, Farenheit 911. He convincingly lays out the situation on his site, allowing you to be the judge:

"Michael Moore has known for a year that we will not distribute this movie, so this is not news." Yes, that is what I thought, too, except Disney kept sending us all that money to make the movie. Miramax said there was no problem. I got the idea that everything was fine.
"It is not in the best interests of our company to distribute a partisan political film that may offend some of our customers." Hmmm. Disney doesn't distribute work that has partisan politics? Disney distributes and syndicates the Sean Hannity radio show every day? I get to listen to Rush Limbaugh every day on Disney-owned WABC. I also seem to remember that Disney distributed a very partisan political movie during a Congressional election year, 1998—a film called The Big One… by, um… ME!

Andy Kaufman - Dead or Alive?

Remember Jim Carrey in "Man on the Moon"? He played the character of performance artist / comedian Andy Kaufman. LA Weekly shares a brief history of Kaufman while simultaneously sparking life to the idea (as portrayed in the film) that Andy might return from the dead. He died on May 16th, 1984 but he had mentioned the idea of faking his own death and returning 20 years later. One week from today marks the 20th anniversary of his "death", and some people believe he might actually show up that night at the House of Blues show. Whether or not he shows up is anyone's guess but either way, I have a feeling we're going to be hearing more about this.

Michael Moore is a big, fat, publicity producing, liar!

I was duped too. Turns out the whole story about Disney recently saying it won't distribute Moore's new film, Fahrenheit 9/11, is nothing more than a publicity stunt. He knew all along that they weren't interested.

"[I]n the CNN interview he said: "Almost a year ago, after we'd started making the film, the chairman of Disney, Michael Eisner, told my agent he was upset Miramax had made the film and he will not distribute it."

Sparklers + Inside = Fire!

Anna's mom gave her some sparklers a long time ago but we never ended up using them. She came into the computer room today and asked if it would be ok to light one in the house. I was surprised that she asked me, but she must have doubted something about the idea anyway I told her to go ahead. I said if something bad happens she could always run out the back door and throw it in the dog's water. Um, about 6 seconds into the burning of the sparkler I suggested she write her name and burn it into her retina. Well the flinging motion of the sparkler caused a bit of hot burning metal to fall onto a piece of paper hanging on the bulletin board and then burned through onto the floor. All Anna could say in surprise was, "Oh no! Something bad DID happen." We now have a little black mark on the hard wood floor to remind us of the dangers of sparklers.

Disney Blocks Moore's New Anti-Bush Movie

The Walt Disney Company is blocking its Miramax division from distributing a new documentary by Michael Moore that harshly criticizes President Bush, tracing the links between the Bush family and Saudis like Osama bin Laden.

Mr. Moore's agent, Ari Emanuel, said Michael D. Eisner, Disney's chief executive, asked him last spring to pull out of the deal with Miramax. Mr. Emanuel said Mr. Eisner expressed particular concern that it would endanger tax breaks Disney receives for its theme park, hotels and other ventures in Florida, where Mr. Bush's brother, Jeb, is governor.

While Emanuel admits that Michael Eisner asked him not to sell this movie to Harvey Weinstein, he defiantly states, "that doesn't mean I listened to him."

According to news sources Miramax and Disney spokespeople had no comment, but Moore on the other hand did.

"Some people may be afraid of this movie because of what it will show," Moore wrote. "But there's nothing they can do about it now because it's done, it's awesome, and if I have anything to say about it, you'll see it this summer -- because, after all, it is a free country."

Fahrenheit 9/11 is one of the films in competition at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

Kevin Mitnick a Hero?

For those of you that don't know, Kevin Mitnick is the famous hacker that was all over the news way back when for being a hacker. They also based the movie Hackers on his story.

Via Plastic QL:

Kevin Mitnick has been labelled a hero in the small town of River Rouge, Michigan where he helped capture a 15-year old student who was phoning in bomb threats into the local high school. How did he do it? "I gave them the same techniques that [Tsutomu] Shimomura used to track me."

Go Flames Go

I haven't watched much hockey in my life, but I did watch the Calgary Flames beat the Detroit Redwings last night, 1 - 0. It was a very intense game with the only goal being scored late in the first over time period. I think it might be the only time I've watched an NHL game from start to finish. The only other time I've ever even really followed the playoffs at all was in 1989 and that was the year the Flames won the Stanley Cup. This past few weeks the Redwings were speculated to be "the team to beat" so hopefully it'll be all downhill from here for the Flames.

Cleaning Bathrooms

To the elderly man whom always uses the far stall:

Please understand that if you're going to use a whole roll of toilet paper every time you take a dump that you are going to need to make a couple of pre-emptive flushes or the toilet is going to continue to flood everytime you use it.

It's not that I have anything against you or your wasteful habbit of using a lot of toilet paper, it's just that they don't pay us enough even if we didn't have to clean up your corny stool every couple of weeks.

Signed your friendly lifeguard,
Jeff

Cleaning toilets = by far the worst part of my job as a lifeguard.
