Welcome to SHALE, the journal that celebrates and records the rich ecology, history, and pre-history of Gabriola, Mudge, and De Courcy Islands, and the surrounding area of the Strait of Georgia, on the northwest coast of North America.

SHALE is about the people, history, archaeology, geology, palaeontology, natural history, cartography, and oceanography of the area. The journal may contain articles, brief notes, local stories and myths, letters, reviews, and reports. It aims to:

  • invite experts to share their knowledge
  • encourage previously unpublished people (including Snunéymuxw, Chemainus, and Lyackson) with a special interest in the history of Gabriola and its surrounding area to record their memories and tell their stories
  • provide background information for displays in the Gabriola Museum.

Articles about other nearby areas (such as the Strait of Georgia or other Gulf Islands) that provide valuable background information are also welcome.

SHALE has been published by the Gabriola Historical and Museum Society since November 2000.  Brief summaries of all the articles published to date are in the back-issues web page. Other pages list the authors and the topics covered to date in the journal, with links to summaries of the major articles.
