Bridges

Bridges are essentially false teeth which are permanently attached to your existing teeth. Unlike dentures, bridges do not require daily removal for cleaning. Rather, bridges are fixed structues which you can floss & brush - just like your original teeth. They are designed to look & feel very similar to your original smile & bite. A bridge preparation is almost identical to a standard crown preparation.

The bridge preparation usually consists of 2 or more individual crown preparations on teeth adjacent to the existing space. To see an example of this, click here .

Bridges can be made to mimic your natural teeth through the use of porcelain & laboratory produced colouring. Conversely, bridges can also be made entirely of metal (however, full metal bridges are become less common due to its compromised esthetics). In order for a bridge to be successful, the supporting teeth (anchorage) must be structurally sound (i.e. have enough strength & supportive bone).
