The above is a photo of an upper Porcelain-Metal Crown. This molar crown is made up of both metal (for strength) and porcelain (for esthetics). Note the Metal Biting Surface is not visible from external viewpoints. For example, if you were smiling, speaking, eating, only the porcelain would be visible.

The patient above wanted to have a gold crown placed because of its long-lasting qualities. Gold, unlike Porcelain Crowns, is less likely to fracture under heavy stress. Furthermore, of all crown materials, Gold is the most bio-compatible one (that is, it is the least likely to irritate or be rejected by the human body).
Porcelain, on the other hand, can be made to mimic natural teeth. It would be used for highly visible crowns, or in situations where esthetics are most important.

Crowns

It takes 2 appointments for a crown procedure to be completed. At the initial appointment, the dentist designs & prepares the tooth by trimming & shaping it. An impression (duplicate mold) is then made of the prepared crown design. The impression is then sent to a laboratory to be fabricated. Before you leave, a temporary plastic crown will be inserted over the prepared tooth.

At the following appointment (usually 7-10 days later), the crown is cemented onto the tooth. Naturally - just like any other tooth, the crowned tooth will require regular hygiene (brushing & flossing) & maintainance.
