When Wisdom Teeth are trapped inside the jaw bone, they are described as being
impacted.
Impacted wisdom teeth can significantly damage adjacent structures such as the
adjacent molars, surrounding bone, or overlying gingival tissues. Such
damage can often be avoided by having the wisdom teeth removed while they are
still under-developed. Very often, unerupted wisdom teeth can be easily
removed through a very small incision made in the gum. The gum then
receives a small dissolvable suture, which will disappear in the course of a
week.
It is advisable to remove wisdom teeth during your teen / early adult years - as
your body is more resilient, with greater ability to heal rapidly.
Most beneficially, because the roots of wisdom tooth are not fully developed
during these years, the risk of damage to the jaw nerve is drastically reduced.
