John MatŽ, Director of Whale Friends, stayed in the cage for the duration. Yvon Raoul, a Kitsilano Secondary High teacher was in the cage for 48 hours, Georgina Peirrera for 24 hours, and Bob Light for 24 hours.

This protest was organized by Whale Friends with the active support of the volunteers of the Coalition for No Whales in Captivity.

Outside the cage a support team handed out leaflets and engaged the public. The cage was in front of the aquarium for four days and in front of City Hall for two.

Yvon Raoul, the Kitsiliano High teacher joined the protest because his students were denied permission by the Park Board to submit a petition and to have a hearing on this issue.

The students, following a well attended debate in 1998 between the Director of the Aquarium, John Nightingale, and the Director of the Whale Friends Project, John MatŽ, collected up to 1200 signatures in their community on a pro-referendum petition. Subsequently their request for a hearing with the Park Board was denied.
