About Me

John Lee is a British-born travel writer living in Vancouver, Canada.
He has taught English in Japan, travelled on the Trans-Siberian Railway and helped build two igloos. In 1998, he was awarded an MA in Political Science by the University of Victoria.
Since 1999, John has written on a diverse range of travel subjects, including beer, nightlife, food, museums, galleries and train trips for newspapers and magazines around the world. In 2004, he became a Lonely Planet guidebook author and has written 14 books for the company.

John won a 2005 Award of Excellence from the North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA). In 2006, he won Tourism B.C.'s Travel Media Award for exceptional coverage of the region, plus two further runner-up prizes from the North American Travel Journalists Association. In 2008, he won the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Award for Journalistic Achievement in Responsible Tourism Reporting and was shortlisted for a Visit Britain travel writing award in the newspaper category.

John won a “gold” in the 2011 NATJA Awards, a “silver” in the 2010 Awards and two Awards of Merit in the 2009 contest. He was also a First Place Winner and Merit Award winner in the 2008 awards. In addition, he was a shortlisted finalist in the 2009 Visit Britain annual travel writing awards.

A professional member of the Travel Media Association of Canada and the Society of American Travel Writers, John is on the advisory committee of the Print Futures: Professional Writing program at Douglas College.
