Kerrisdale Basketball League

League moved to a new website http://www.kerrisdalebasketballleague.ca/

The second week back was okay.  The Div. 1 games are going well, but there are issues with a couple of Div. 2 teams - already!   More comments posted in the Comments tab.  Biraj

Fall League - General Notes.

1) There are 28 teams registered, with two Divisions of 14 teams each.

2) League starts Sept. 10, 2006 and ends Jan. 21/2007.

3)  Games are at Kerrisdale and Kitsilano Community Centers with the first game at 1 pm at both centers, and the last game at 8:10 pm, also at both centers.  Teams may be scheduled at either center.

4) Please note monitoring duties.  For the last game at each center, a monitor from the previous game has been assigned.  We'll try to ease or eliminate this monitoring duty over time with paid help.  However, for the time being, please monitor your assigned games.  Also, if teams playing the last game could bring their own monitors, this will let the "forward" monitors leave after their game.

5) There are 6 new teams, all in Div. 2.

Team Spirit Rating

Spirit Rating Description
5.0 Excellent Game.  Obvious and natural respect for the game and for the other team.  No issues.  Game had a great flow. Great basketball.
4.5 Great game.  A few issues, but dealt with promptly.  Game was well within the spirit of the league.  Great basketball
4.0 Good game.   A number of issues.  All issues dealt with, but not easily. Issues interfered slightly with the basketball, nevertheless, an enjoyable game.
3.5 Okay game.  Quite a few issues, some of which were dealt with, but others hanging over the game.  Basketball was average as the issues affected the game.  There were stretches where the basketball and spirit were both good.
3.0 Poor game.  Quite a few issues, which affected the overall tone of the game.  Although the poor spirit was limited to a few players, the issues affected the entire game.  There were only short stretches with good basketball.
2.5 or less Very poor game.  Too many issues.  Unfriendly game.  Spirit was outside the spirit of this league

"BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shot clock rule adjustment  --In response to the issue about defense not having a reasonable chance of possession after fouls, particularly in last 3 minutes  --  On a defensive foul, offense has the balance of the shot clock or 15 secs, whichever is greater, for the ball to hit the rim.  Intentional fouls are automatic 2 points.

Summary of meeting Feb. 09 & 19 meetings

1) Foul calling - no issues - seems like this is well understood.   Be quick with the resolution.  Do not discuss.  If you want to do a quick check with the opposing player - no problem - this is a good thing to do.

2) Monitoring--- monitors often have difficulty handling situations because the situations are difficult to handle, and monitors are not refs.  Therefore, captains are asked to help the monitor resolve situations.  In addition, players are asked to also do their part, as the league can only run well if we all share in the responsibility of ensuring a fair game.  Captains are asked to ensure that every player on their respective rosters understand the rules.

3) If defense calls a foul or other infraction on the offensive player, the ball does not get turned over unless the offensive player agrees with the call.  Sometimes, the defensive player turns the ball around too quickly to give the offensive player a fair chance to agree with the call.  Players on defense need to give offensive players a chance at a fair call.  This is generally true of all calls. Only in agreement can the ball get turned over.  Ofcourse, the monitor can step in any time and make a call.  The monitor does have the power to make that call, but to do it fairly, and mainly for the sake of keeping the game going.

4) Substitutions - see rules - be fair.  Let the defender know.  Ball can't have crossed half - some flexibility here as long as the defender is in position to guard the incoming sub.  Initial warning, then foul.

5) No hands on Defense.  Learn to play D with your feet, as is taught in fundamental basketball.  Don't use your hands to slow the offensive player or nudge or push the player.

6) Illegal D. - women mainly playing safety.   Please adjust.  Players can't be in the key if defender is on opposite side of court, similar to defensive 3 sec. rule.  Initial warning, and then foul.

7) Picks - don't "pick off" players, especially above the 3 pt. line.  No problems with setting picks above the 3 pt. line to get some space for a 3 pt. shot.  The "picking off" is mainly referring to blind siding players that are moving with considerable momentum in the open court.  Not worth it! - there isn't much to be gained by this in our games.  No problems with good picks elsewhere.  This is a key part of basketball.

8) Elbowing by player on Scotia in game against Blaze.  Player has been suspended for one game, as well, the team has been warned that if a player (any player on team) is suspended again or thrown out of a game, the team will default one game.  Also, the next infraction by the suspended player will result in the ejection of the player from the league.

9) Trash talking in game between MP Ballerz/Beaver Lumber.  Apparently, BL players were talking too much from the bench.  Since BL is a new team, the team is given a chance to adjust.  Penalties will kick in if it happens again.

10) Clarified the last 3 minutes of a close game -- Stop time if the score is around 18 or less.  Bonus if point spread is 6 pts or less.  Teams can have one extra time out each if the game is within 6 points.

11) Basketball is generally very good, and most of the play is played with good spirit.

12) Note the minor penalties on the website.

13) Stop the game if there is an issue - briefly!

14) Forward monitoring.  Some teams are scheduled to monitor after their game.  In most cases either myself at Kerrisdale or Hansen at Kits will take over, but no guarantees.

15) No jewelry.  No Lance Armstrong type wrist bands

16) Picks - guys not to use hands, except for a few people who have been taught to cross their arms - as long as they're not used to push or nudge.

17) Clean up your bench area - water bottles, paper towels, etc.. - the place is a mess sometimes.  No food or drink in the gyms.

18) Air ball - rebound by shooter is a travel.

19)  Monitor/myself have final say on all calls on court, particularly when there is a disagreement resulting in a stalemate.  Players will make about 97% of the calls.

20) Year end social.. So far Jodi (RV) and Howard (Scotia) are working on this.  Updates along the way..

21) Finish the game - play until final buzzer goes.  Play doesn't end when a team is comfortably ahead - that's just the score - game ends when the buzzer goes.  Get into a habit of doing this as it will enhance the league spirit.

22) Lost & Found - At both locations.  Don't wait to check as items don't last long in the Lost & Found.

The main message was to stick to basketball and enjoy the game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Captains and other players, please note the penalties below.  Unfortunately, we need to do something to get players and captains to take some responsibility in helping ensure that we have good games - this is what it's all about - just having a good game - a spirited, running style, exhaustive game..  There is no desire to have penalties, so hopefully, this will be a passing thing.  Once we can get some teams back on track with the spirit of this league, we'll remove some of the penalties.

Penalties

Type Number of Occurences Penalty
Default 1 Lose any tie
Default 2 Dismissed from League or sent to bottom of Division at discretion of league organizer
2 Women and/or 3 Men 4 One Default
No Monitor 3 One Default
Part Monitor 2 One No Monitor

League Notes:

1) For the 1 pm games at Kerrisdale, please show up before 1 pm, ready to start the game at 1 pm.  This first game has been starting late regularly, which has been delaying the subsequent games.  Thanks.

2) Important Notice:  Please note that absolutely no food is allowed in either gym - at Kits & at Kerrisdale.  Drinks in closed containers are okay - no pop cans or coffee!  Since we started this year, people have been leaving a mess in both locations.  There are almost always liquid, used tape, wrappers, etc.. all over the floor, near the benches.  Also, many people leave their water bottles behind.  Please pick up your own garbage and recycling and use the respective containers in both gyms.  There is no one to pick up after you.  If you don't, I have to.  Please try and limit yourselves to just a closed water bottle.  Thanks for your cooperation.

3) Please check the web schedule for your game times as well as your monitoring duties.  The schedule will remain as constant as possible, but sometimes, it may be necessary to change it along the way.  In these situations, the captains will be notified individually with as much notice as possible.

4) The league is divided into two approximately equal Groups of 10 teams each.  Initially, teams will play a Round Robin within each Group.  After the Round Robin, the top 5 teams in each Group will form Division 1, and the lower 5 teams in each Group will form Division 2.  The teams will then play the 5 teams that they haven't played in each Division to come up with the final Divisional Standings.  We'll then play the playoffs to determine the final overall standings.
