| Lewis moon snail |
|
| Latin Name: |
Polinices lewisii |
| Geographic Range: |
Range is from Vancouver Island to Baja. |
| SCUBA Divers Info: |
| Its hard to miss this snail since it can reach almost a foot in
length. It is so big in fact that it's shell is hardly visible
under the mass of mantle. It lays circular egg cases called sand
collars made of sand stuck together with mucus to protect its
eggs. These snails eat clams, they drill into the clam at the
hinge end using their radula leaving a characteristic
counter-sunk hole. |
Beachwalkers Info: |
| Look carefully at low tide in sand bays and eel grass beds for the partially buried moon snail or its "sand collar" egg cases. |
