On this Saturday I had the opportunity to go diving with Porpoise Bay charters on the Sunshine Coast. I was impressed with the operation and enjoyed both dives we did. Our last dive was a site called Tazoonie Narrows.
Tazoonie Narrows is a small inlet off of Seshelt Inlet which narrows in a spot called the pinch to only about 100 feet across. This makes for a reasonable current dive under controlled conditions. You start the dive in calm water and make your way towards the pinch. What makes this dive interesting tome is that as you approach the pinch both the life and the current start to increase. In the area of the pinch life more resembles that found in the Gulf island passes. We saw a juvinile yellow-eye rockfish a red brotula and a good selection of more common fish. Also as we neared the pinch we found a good number of veiled chitons (definately a high current specied. Along with the chitons we found a varied slection of hyroids including orange hydroid (another high current animal. In the pinch itself woody stemmed kelp and invertibrate life dominates. Tazoonie Narrows is a great starter current dive that allows the novice to slowly move into what can be respectable current and know that they are in a controlled spot with limited depth. just what the beginner needs before tackling someof B.C.'s more agressive current dives. Top that off with the fact that the dive itself has lots to see and you have a winner of a dive site. |
