Keeping in touch seems to be difficult for a lot of people, including me, but this is one of the reasons for writing. The other is, I'm trying to put together a paper-based database of all our grads to aid 'grad communication'.
The intent is to keep everyone talking with each other, and hopefully provide useful contacts within the art and professional community, as well as other artists in general. - Contacts such as: galleries, film/TV producers, animation studios, etc. If nothing else, you have the opportunity to get in touch with anyone, plus have a list of potentially cheap places to stay when you travel across the country. "ha ha, well, you never know!?"
I know whenever going back to Vancouver, I have to cross off a few more obsolete numbers Soooooo, I'd appreciate any #'s and/or addresses of fellow grads you can come up with, especially in the '3-dimensional, Printmaking and Painting' areas, as I have very little contact there (but getting better). Even a vague location will be helpful, since a resident of that area might be able to look them up (There is now an alphabetical list to aid finding people in your 'little black book').
Over 7 years have gone by since we graduated (May 12th, 1990), and in my "initial" travels, I'd noticed very few of *us* were doing what we *want* or were schooled to do (things have picked up in the latter years). My conclusion was this: since its definitely NOT for a lack of talent, it's perhaps a lack of organization, contacts, P.R. and people willing to give un-established artists a break (or the student loan is too much of a burden). I'm hoping this list can change the trend, and build back the confidence & drive we all had as 'wide-eyed' naïve students!!!
If you write me, I in turn will send you an updated list of addresses - bios that I have so far. (58 respondies so far)
Over three years have gone by since I actively started sending people this list, and the response has been fairly positive. Perhaps next year the long list will be professionally printed, when I've contacted a couple more people.
Optional: If possible I'd like everyone to include a slide, neg (or print) of themselves so that I can include it by everyone's name. (I know 'I' don't remember a lot of our grads by name). It looks much 'cooler' now that there are pictures - if I do say so myself, and I guess I am.
In conclusion, I often feel that to make it in the art world, it's really the people who you know, and who 'they' know that gives birth to assignments and knowledge. You'll be helping me set up a useful 'network'.
My purpose is not monetary, (although I would not refuse any donations that are burning a hole in your pocket), but to establish an 'artists network'.
Factor in U.S., and international as well to estimate base shipping costs for me - minimum. (Preliminary quarterly mailing calculations are: 9.382 per person per year printed individually) Check with the printers too as to making a print run of 58 - 60 copies, which currently would be 1044@18x58 (1044-1080) physical pages but double sided.
