Len's Prize

Len planted some heirloom Sicilian Saucers in 2005, just to see how large a tomato he could grow.  The result was a 3.68 lb. monster that was too large to fit in an ice cream bucket. He was so impressed with this tomato that he saved the seeds and we named the variety Len's Prize.  These seeds produced an even heavier tomato in 2006, weighing in at almost 5 lbs. Len has won the ribbon for largest tomato at the Comox Valley Fall Fair and the Saanich Fall Fair for the past four years. The really big ones tend to be very irregular in shape but some of the two-pounders are excellent slicers.  By the way, we have found that these tomatoes are too big to sell but they make great gifts and people rave about the taste.

As pretty as a picture!  This Len's Prize was so beautiful that we have saved its seeds and called it Fiona.  It is named after the little girl in the picture who was visiting from the Netherlands last summer.  She did a good job of holding it considering it weighed in at 3.4 lbs.
