Tomato Varieties 2008

Len's Prize (pictured on left with Len and Joan) and Joan's Roma are two varieties that are only available at our farm.  The other hard-to-find tomato that we have this season is Tumbler.  Our selection is down from the over-thirty varieties of tomatoes that we offered last year to just fifteen.  We take pride in growing great tasting tomatoes and strong tomato plants for the home gardener.  We are having fun trying to grow the largest tomato but we have many varieties of tomatoes in all shapes, sizes, and colours.  Just select your varieties from the list below, then order ahead so we can put plants aside for you until planting time.  No payment is required until you pick up the plants. Last summer (2007) was a challenging growing season in our area.  After several years of hot and dry summers, last year's cooler temperatures and rainy weather late in the summer provided the perfect conditions for Late Blight.  Last year many people lost their tomato crops to Late Blight, a disease which can turn tomato plants and their fruit into a black mess practically overnight. This could happen again and the best way to prevent a reoccurence is to supply a cover from the rain, and still allow for lots of air circulation; the dryer the foliage the better.  For more information on the pruning and care of your tomato plants, please refer to the Tomato Care Page.  This page should help to identify a couple of diseases that are common to our area as well as how to prune the various types of tomato plants.
